CHAMPAIGN, Ill. Food-borne diseases might soon have another warrior to contend with, thanks to a new molecule discovered by chemists at the University of Illinois. The new antibiotic, an analog of the widely used food preservative nisin, also has potential to be a boon to the dairy industry as a treatment for bovine mastitis.

The antibiotic nisin occurs naturally in milk, a product of bacteria resident in the cow's udder. It helps keep milk from spoiling and kills a broad spectrum of bacteria that cause food-borne illness, most notably listeria and clostridium. It was approved as a food additive in 1969, and since then has become prevalent in the food industry in more than 50 countries.

"It's good to know that there are natural products added to our food that protect us from diseases," said lead researcher Wilfred van der Donk, a chemistry professor at Illinois. "Many people probably don't even realize that, or think it's some kind of a non-natural chemical. Last summer we had the listeria outbreak, and that's a good example of people dying from pathogens in food. You don't hear of such outbreaks often, and that's in part because of the compounds that are added to food to kill the pathogens."

Nisin also shows promise as a treatment for bovine mastitis, an infection in cows that costs the dairy industry billions each year since milk produced during and shortly after antibiotic treatment has to be thrown out. Since nisin already is present in low levels in milk, farmers using nisin to treat mastitis may not need to discard milk or meat from recently treated animals.

However, for all its utility, nisin has drawbacks. It's produced in an acidic environment, but it becomes unstable at the neutral pH levels needed for many foods or pharmaceuticals. It also becomes unstable at higher temperatures, limiting its uses.

While studying the genome of another bacterium that lives at high temperatures, van der Donk's group found genes to make a molecule with a similar structure and function to nisin, known as an analog. They isolated the genes and inserted them into E. coli so they could produce the new antibiotic, dubbed geobacillin, in large enough quantities to study its structure and function.

"As it turns out, geobacillin is more stable, both in respect to pH and temperature," van der Donk said. "We think this is good news for potential use of geobacillin in food."

Nisin, and presumably geobacillin, work by binding to a molecule the pathogen needs to build its cell wall and then poking holes in the bacterial cell's membrane, a one-two punch that quickly kills the invader. However, the two antibiotics have slight structural differences. Nisin's structure has five looped regions, formed by cross-links in the protein chain. Geobacillin has seven loops thanks to two additional cross-links, which give the protein added stability.

The team tested geobacillin against several foodborne and disease-causing bacteria and found it similarly effective or more effective than nisin, depending on the bacteria. Most significantly, it was three times more active against the main contagious bacteria responsible for bovine mastitis. Contagious mastitis is devastating for dairy farmers, as the bacteria can quickly spread throughout a herd. In addition, since mastitis could be caused by a number of different infections, geobacillin's broad-spectrum activity makes it a very attractive treatment option.

Next, the researchers plan to test geobacillin against a wider spectrum of disease-causing bacteria. Many tests of safety, efficacy and economic production lie ahead, although geobacillin has shown great promise in tests to date. The researchers hope that its greater stability will enable medicinal applications for geobacillin that nisin could not realize, both for bovine mastitis and possibly for human disease.

"Nisin was very promising in early preclinical trials in that it was very effective in killing multidrug-resistant bacteria in mouse models," said van der Donk, "but because of its instability, it has a very short half-life in blood. So we're looking to see whether geobacillin has greater serum stability."

The researchers published their findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The National Institutes of Health supported this work. Van der Donk is also a Howard Hughes Medical Investigator.

Carbon Logic ? Property Investing in Rental Attributes

There are lots of approaches in which anyone will make a living in relation to office space for rent investing a number of them have more dangers than other individuals. It goes without indicating that people who carry the greatest perils are frequently the very housing investment decision methods using the highest potential revenue but sluggish and steady, in many instances, wins the race. Flipping residences is in the information a great deal due to the fact a lot of fortunes are produced doing this-more than the usual handful of have already been lost on this venture also but those people really don?t make the reports nearly as usually.

Working with rental properties just isn?t almost as glamorous and does not deliver the pretty much prompt income that flipping houses might nevertheless it is additionally a fantastic and very legitimate technique of warehouses investing which will assemble a steady income as time passes in the event you strategy correctly. Rental qualities are in demand now over ever with numerous people today going into foreclosure and dropping the households they?ve labored challenging to build for their people. For this reason rental properties certainly are a very good point to individual at this time, in particular the ones that are family members residences.

There are various good reasons that people hire and while there are many risks involved when leasing properties, the dangers are substantially reduce as opposed to risks involved with flipping or pre-construction financial commitment endeavors. There are some stuff you really should contemplate when paying for a residence to the sake of leasing nevertheless as a way to create a wise and long long lasting choice in your real-estate financial commitment.

First, only put money into rental qualities in spots that folks want to reside in. It may well be accurate which you should purchase property low-cost inside of a handful of quite operate straight down sections of town nonetheless it is uncertain you will turn those people qualities into worthwhile rental units. It?s finest to fork out somewhat more for just a a lot more desirable handle for renters. You will find that your qualities are inhabited a lot more often, that can cause you to far more dollars in the long operate.

Second, concentrate to the styles of individuals while in the place and invest in rentals appropriately. It really is quite possible to turn huge households into numerous smaller apartment models (in accordance to regional zoning legal guidelines) which might be ideal for faculty scholars. You are doing not desire to do that even so in a location that may be geared toward family members homes and is not going to be friendly or tolerant of faculty college students. Style and design the rentals based on the current market you happen to be trying to attract.

Third, do not be greedy. The aim of possessing business property is not surprisingly, to make money. Simultaneously should your price your properties far too superior you can find that they sit vacant a lot more often than not. Each and every thirty day period that your property is empty is usually a month which you are not producing revenue on that house at best and a thirty day period which you are dropping money at worst.

Fourth, know the market. Examine the nearby current market for getting property and leasing real estate. This may assist with numerous points, not the least of that is determining irrespective of whether or not any presented property could make a gorgeous rental unit. Yet another thing it?ll assist you figure out is simply how much lease the models that you are thinking of can convey in month just after thirty day period.

Last but not least, when renting qualities you must hold your eye within the long-term goals fairly than shortsighted ambitions. Home rental is actually a marathon relatively than the usual sprint together with the biggest income coming at the conclusion. You will need to spend as minor fascination about the home as you possibly can and shell out the property off as rapidly as feasible in order to comprehend the utmost revenue likely and obtain new attributes. The actual cash when renting qualities for a housing investment isn?t really in renting out one or two units but twenty or thirty. The more rental qualities you possess the greater cash you stand to produce from proudly owning them.

The joy of motherhood | Family Times

The joy of being a mum Much is said about the challenges and stress of parenthood. However, there is little emphasis placed on the joy of being a mother, celebrating who you are as a woman and including fun in our daily lives.

In an abridged excerpt from her book How to Keep the YOU in Mum, author Karyn Riley highlights the importance of acknowledging joy and gratitude and celebrating the small stuff, too.

?Whether you?re a mother, sister, daughter or friend you are you first and foremost ? a unique, individual, wonderful woman and person. Becoming a mother is an amazing, incredible experience and taking on the role of parent in addition to our many other roles, responsibilities and demands is something we need to acknowledge, celebrate and congratulate ourselves on.

?Yet all too often women don?t celebrate their achievements enough, whether it?s securing a well-paid job, staying home to raise a family, overcoming adversity or simply getting through a difficult day.

Gratitude
?Whether celebrating something big or small, it?s important to create time and space to reflect on and celebrate you, your family, and your life as it is right now. Write down, acknowledge and think about what you?re grateful for, becoming consciously aware of the positive aspects of daily life.

Attitude and action
?Your attitude is everything. Having a positive outlook on life not only makes a good day great, it can help you get through any difficult or challenging times. Even if you can?t immediately see anything positive from a situation or event, try to consider what you?ve learnt to apply or do differently in future. Simply deciding to let go of something rather than bearing a grudge or carrying emotional baggage allows you closure and the ability to move forward in life.

?A positive attitude and action helps build up your confidence, self-belief and ability to cope with life?s many challenges. Each day decide to take one small step, make one simple change or do one thing differently that will bring you closer to who and where you want to be in life. Apply a simple, step-by-step strategy to accomplish your goals and aspirations. Take action daily, persevere and keep the end in mind ? you will achieve more by focusing on less.

Have fun
?Sometimes the burden of responsibility and seemingly never-ending demands of parenting means there is little time or energy left for fun. However, kids young and old need to have fun. As parenting author Nigel Latta says: ?Fun is the glue that holds families together.?

?When was the last time you had fun? Consider simple ways to include fun in your daily life and celebrate the small stuff, such as ?me? time, catching up with friends, spending special time with your children (together and separately), partner and loved ones, and creating family traditions. Brainstorm ideas for ?fun-spiration? and keep them handy for everyday use.

The benefits of celebrating
?Celebrating ourselves and our successes (whether big or small) is often overlooked or put off due to our busy, demanding, sometimes stressful lives. Celebrating who you are and acknowledging the positive keeps you focused on the present, while motivating you towards future success in life.

?Celebrating allows you to simply enjoy the moment and see the ?big picture?; your overall vision for life. It can also help minimise stress and feeling overwhelmed by focusing on what you?ve achieved, rather than beating yourself up with negative self-talk or striving for unattainable ?perfection?.

?Celebrating is good for us: it improves our overall health and well-being, encourages self-acceptance and self-love, and helps us live and enjoy a well-balanced life.?

Crossover: Fashion feeds abstract art

New Delhi, March 19 (IANS) Art and fashion are like warp and weft, twined naturally into each other. A new breed of younger artists from the world over is now trying to create a contemporary visual language to express abstract narratives with symbols from popular fashion.

Faseeh Salim, a Pakistani textile designer-turned artist, uses textiles, fibres, knits, embroidery and mannequins as mediums to make installations and visuals that are fashion on the surface but works of art with deep meaning on the broad canvas.

'They are journeys in self-expression with a political, social and cultural message,' Lahore-based Salim, who was in India for a residency programme, told IANS.

Salim knits body-like sculptures with matex fibre which shrinks when exposed to heat in combination with stainless steel fibre. The sculptures are knitted on industrial knitting machines, 'ones on which they knit sweaters', and moulded to show the 'fluid body statistics in the world of fashion and its relation with clothes that have to fit', the artist said.

One of his sculptures, 36'26'36', made in India, experiments with shop mannequins as a reference point for articles of clothings in which the body becomes a slave to the fibres that drape it.

The earthy colours and ethnic art of India are at the core of young Taiwanese artist Andy Wen's digitally printed 'art clothes'.

'I am from an arts background, but I am moving to fashion. I am trying to create digitally-printed India-style clothes for women. The Indian prints are accessible and different...Art and fashion meet at many points,' Yen told IANS.

The artist, who was in India recently, created a range of 12 fusion Chinese-Indian clothes in cotton and silk painted with Indian motifs.

The art of copying, traditional fashion drawings and installation art meet in Mumbai-based artist Archana Hande's new mixed media work, 'Copy Master ji'.

Hande often uses textile printing technology on solid mediums like wood blocks to transform traditional Indian art into modern decorative designs that comment on urbanisation and globalisation.

'Everything is art. Art and fashion are two different mediums, but they both express. If I can design a costume that looks good on you, it is art,' Hande told IANS.

Norwegian Julie Skarland, a fashion designer, moved to Delhi six years ago to make a career in conceptual art and fashion.

'My exposure to art and fashion helps me explore both the mediums in my work,' Skarland told IANS. The artist, who trained in art and architecture in Norway, has studied dress making and fashion design in Paris.

'The Collection', a new installation by Skarland, is a set of open matchboxes on which Skarland reproduces a spring-summer women's wear collection in miniature drawings combining Norwegian progressiveness with Parisian chic on an essentially Indian medium.

'I use recycled material like old fabrics and table cloths for my clothes and it inspires me to recycle objects for my installation. I usually work towards developing a concept,' the artist said.

Kolkata-based artist Paula Sengupta falls back on the nostalgia of the Bengal partition and human suffering with elements of fashion and textiles in her visual art narratives while Delhi-based artist-cum-fashion designer Varun Sardana 'believes in fashion as a form of visual art'.

Sardana used 'music, theatre and performance art in his shows to express ideas'.

'Fashion is personalised art. The connect between the two is the thought process. I try to create narratives,' Sardana told IANS. One of his rare mixed media installations, 'On My Passing Away', brought clothes, fashion, social commentary and his persona under one roof in a bare room.

'Using auto portraits of me in my skin and work from my recent collection of clothes, I have tried to explore the duality of my existence,' Sardana said.

All information on the same platform - arts, fashion and marketing - overlap, says gallerist Peter Nagi. 'The next bridge is politics with which art, fashion and design have to connect.

'Politics has to be more creative,' Nagi said, predicting a trend for the future.

Roles have reversed, says graphic novelist and designer Sarnath Banerjee. 'Fashion people are working with narrative concepts and art is becoming decorative like fashion,' Banerjee said.

History says art and fashion have been coming closer since the beginning of the 20th century when leading European and American fashion designers became collectors of haute art - allowing their art works to influence their clothes.

Cross-Border Risk Management for a Dynamic World

The following is a guest post by Dante Disparte and Daniel Wagner. Disparte is?managing director of partner solutions with Clements Worldwide, based in Washington, DC. Wagner is chief executive officer of Country Risk Solutions, director of global strategy with the PRS Group, and author of the new book Managing Country Risk.

Among the many challenges facing risk managers in what has become the new normal is how to effectively manage cross-border risk, which is more important today than in recent memory. Whether we realize it or not, the rules of engagement for conducting international business have changed over the past three years ? the risks associated with cross-border transactions are high and risk aversion is high, but the margin for error is low. This means that risk managers? jobs have become more difficult.

No longer does a simple risk/reward arithmetic serve as the basis for making cross-border investment decisions ? or managing the many risks facing existing international investments. Today?s dynamic landscape calls not only for a long-term orientation toward risk ? sometimes decades after the investment is made ? it also requires a qualitative understanding of short-term options should the worst occur.

It is only natural in this transformed landscape that international businesses would contemplate assuming cross-border risk with a greater degree of caution, but one of the things that has changed is that the new normal includes a paradigm shift. A combination of a decade of globalization, a decoupling in growth patterns between the developed and developing worlds, and the seemingly constant nature of political change implies a new risk profile?? whether trading or investing in developed or emerging economies. Let us not forget that since 2008, much of the world?s cross-border risk originated?- and continues to emanate from ? Europe and North America.

The temptation among many international companies will be to trade and invest in developing countries as a result of the disparity in growth rates without, perhaps, fully considering the implications of doing so from a political risk perspective. The need to do so was always present, but the way many businesses traded or invested internationally before the crisis did not require the same degree of due diligence that is required today. Indeed, the rapidity with which political upheaval dominates the air waves has many risk managers assessing their firm?s readiness for the increasingly unpredictable and fragile markets to which they are exposed.

You?ve heard the story before ? it all sounds good on paper. Country X is growing rapidly, it has a democratic government, demand for your product there is high, and the country or buyer appears to have the money to pay for it. But in an era when economic volatility is high, and when change occurs it tends to be dynamic and long-lasting, it is essential to consider what may happen?five or 10 years from now ? long after your long-term investment has been made, when the government changes and the country can no longer pay its bills. What tools, if any, does your company have to assess and manage such risks? Is protecting the P&L with reactive solutions sufficient any longer, and what mechanisms are in place to consider exposure to staff and contractors, as well as physical assets?

To the extent that international companies devote any resources at all to understanding cross-border trade and investment climates (and, in our experience, most do not), they tend to over-rely on externally generated country risk analyses, which are more often than not produced generically and are not entirely appropriate for specific transactions. This is perhaps the most common mistake risk managers make. They believe that because they may have information about the general political and economic profile of a country, that they have a true handle on the nature of the risks associated with doing business there. All too often, the rapid pace of change is making static country risk indicators an outdated and one-dimensional tool in a risk manager?s weapon arsenal.

Leading practitioners may employ a multi-faceted model and pay particular attention to early warning signs that can be gleamed from their intuition and local and external information sources. Gauging legal and regulatory risk, a country?s friendliness toward foreign trade and investment, and other companies? experience there are full of common sense, yet less often explored. Too often, companies get caught in an ?investment trap,? committing long-term resources to a country only to find that the bill of goods they were sold ? or thought they understood ? turned out to be something completely different. There are plenty of stories out there about companies whose investments turned into disaster because the regulatory environment changed, a legal issue arose, international sanctions affected their ability to operate, or they selected the wrong joint venture partner. After the investment has been made, it is often too late to pull out without incurring large losses and experiencing reputational risk once the story hits the press.

Another common issue is that the lines of communication between risk management personnel, decision makers and business development are often either bypassed, convoluted or just plain wrong. We have seen instances where:

  • Risk management is given only cursory participation in the transaction approval process.
  • Sales teams bypass risk management entirely, or ignore risk management?s recommendations, because they fear a transaction will be canceled as a result of unacceptably high levels of risk.
  • A CEO delivers a presentation to a board of directors that is false, but he believes it to be true, because the risk manager?s staff said it was.
  • A board of directors has no idea what questions they should be asking of corporate decision makers.
  • ?A risk manager may have the right information, but it is based on a short-term assessment of the risks. The long-term view may be completely different. In the absence of knowing what questions to ask and having clear lines of communication, the right information may not be taken into consideration.

It may sound simplistic, but the?easiest way to limit the possibility that unforeseen events will occur is to establish clear reporting lines and do your homework ? really do your homework ? and either hire one or more individuals in your company to focus full time on managing these risks, or hire an external firm to create a customized risk profile for each and every investment your company plans to make. The expense involved often pays for itself many times over when a problem is uncovered and avoided, yet many companies are happy to invest millions of dollars to make cross-border investments without doing their homework. The days when that will get the job done are long gone.

The following is a guest post by Dante Disparte and Daniel Wagner. Disparte is managing director of partner solutions with Clements Worldwide. Wagner is chief executive officer of Country Risk Solutions, director of global strategy with the PRS Group and author of the new book Managing Country Risk.
