SKorea misidentifies China as cyberattack origin

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korean investigators said Friday they had mistakenly identified a Chinese Internet address as the source of a cyberattack that paralyzed tens of thousands of computers at banks and broadcasters earlier this week. But they said they still believe the attack originated from abroad.

The error by South Korean regulators raises questions about their ability to track down the source of an attack that hit 32,000 computers at six companies Wednesday and exposed South Korea's Internet security and vulnerability to hackers.

South Korean investigators said Thursday that a malicious code that spread through the server of one target, Nonghyup Bank, was traced to an Internet Protocol address in China. Even then it was clear that the attack could have originated somewhere else, because such data can easily be manipulated by hackers. Experts suspect North Korea was behind the attack.

The state-run Korea Communications Commission said Friday that the IP address actually belonged to a computer at the bank. The IP address was used only for the company's internal network and was identical to a public Chinese address.

"We were careless in our efforts to double-check and triple-check," KCC official Lee Seung-won told reporters. "We will now make announcements only if our evidence is certain."

Commission officials said an analysis of malware and servers indicates the attack was likely orchestrated from abroad. They didn't elaborate.

Yonhap news agency, in an analysis Friday, called the blunder "ridiculous" and said the announcement is certain to undermine the government's credibility.

Experts in Seoul suspect North Korea in the attack on broadcasters YTN, MBC and KBS, as well as Nonghyup and two other banks. Seoul alleges six cyberattacks by North Korea on South Korean targets since 2009. But the investigation will take weeks, and officials say they have no proof yet of Pyongyang's involvement.

South Korean officials say that Wednesday's attacks appeared to come from "a single organization" but they have yet to assign blame. North Korea hasn't yet mentioned the shutdown.

South Korea has set up a team of computer security experts from the government, military and private sector since to identify the hackers and is preparing to deal with more possible attacks, presidential spokesman Yoon Chang-jung told reporters earlier Friday. He didn't elaborate on the possibility of more attacks.

Determining who's behind a digital attack is often difficult. But North Korea is a leading suspect for several reasons.

It has unleashed a torrent of threats against Seoul and Washington since punishing U.N. sanctions were imposed for Pyongyang's Feb. 12 nuclear test. It calls ongoing routine U.S.-South Korean military drills a threat to its existence. Pyongyang also threatened revenge after blaming Seoul and Washington for a separate Internet shutdown that disrupted its own network last week.

The cyberattack did not affect South Korea's government, military or infrastructure, and there were no initial reports that customers' bank records were compromised. But it disabled cash machines and disrupted commerce in this tech-savvy, Internet-dependent country.

All three of the banks that were hit were back online and operating regularly Friday. It could be next week before the broadcasters' systems have fully recovered, though they said their programming was never affected.

British government says gas demand to be met despite low storage

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) said on Friday gas demand would be met despite an outage on an interconnector link to Belgium and low storage levels.

"We are aware of the temporary disruption (and) this does not change the overall picture. Gas supplies are not running out," DECC said in a statement.

"Protracted cold weather increases demand but the UK gas market is functioning well and our gas needs are continuing to be met."

The UK's Met Office says that unusually cold weather is expected to last into next week, and perhaps until after Easter.

While DECC said that storage was important, it pointed out that Britain's domestic reserves and its diverse import sources were sufficient to safeguard supply.

"Storage is important to meeting our peak needs, but it has to be judged in proportion to the diversity we have from other sources," DECC said.

"Some countries on mainland Europe have more gas storage capacity than the UK but they don't have the benefit of North Sea supply and our extensive range of import infrastructure," it said.

Britain's stored gas reserves have fallen to record lows during a sustained cold snap this month. Storage levels have been depleted by 90 percent, their lowest levels on record, data from Gas Infrastructure Europe shows.

Gyms Offer Programmes For Children As Young As Five... | Stuff.co.nz

Kids as young as five are joining gyms such as Les Mills in a bid to battle the bulge.

While experts say the programmes could help combat childhood obesity, others were concerned starting formal exercise so young could lead to poor body image and eating disorders.

Les Mills in Christchurch has started a new "kids' fitness" programme involving one-hour classes tailored for groups of five to eight-year-olds and nine to 12-year-olds.

Les Mills' Joshua Dickson said the purpose of the classes was to "offer a platform for developing young Kiwis' confidence, fitness, and to show the next generation that exercise isn't limited to crunches, high-performing athletes, or sweating on treadmills".

The nine to 12-year-olds engage in aerobic exercise through dance, martial arts, jumps, and games - as well as core strength tasks and even yoga; while the five to eight-year-olds "achieve similar things but on an age-appropriate level", Dickson said.

The classes would also help combat New Zealand's growing childhood obesity, Dickson said.

"Anything that challenges kids' fitness, the perception of fitness, or simply makes exercise fun will work towards this growing trend."

The Franks Brothers Gym in Sydenham, run by All Blacks Ben and Owen Franks, offers a Crossfit training programme for children aged 10-16.

The programme, which includes light weight training, is "designed to increase speed, stamina, power, strength, agility, balance, co-ordination, accuracy and flexibility".

"Conducted sensibly it is safe for children to do body weight movements and light weight training," the brothers' website says.

While health experts highlight the need for children to get enough exercise, others were worried about the psychological aspects of gym routines for children.

University of Otago researcher Dr Lisette Burrows, who was also president of Physical Education New Zealand, did not believe children should be in "regimented" training.

"We want to develop a lifelong desire to engage in activity whatever your body shape. We don't think young people need to associate fitness with the gym or with the ideal body type. They can get their exercise through exploring and having fun."

Christchurch professor of psychology Nick Draper said while all exercise helped combat a "growing problem" of obesity, young children did not necessarily need a formal routine.

"Unless there is a specific reason an individual young person needs to be in the gym, then most young children, such as five to 10-year-olds, can just be out having fun and experiencing a whole range of activities.

"You need to be careful with young children as they're growing up that you don't push them too hard or in the wrong ways."

Burrows said parents and coaches also had to be conscious of the potential for eating disorders.

"Research shows that children have very strong ideas about body types and so called ?fat' and ?skinny' people. Young people don't need to become obsessive about their shape or fitness level." She believed the gym was a negative environment for children.

"People need to be aware that children, even young ones, are very aware of what's going on around them and concepts of bodies and fitness. There are a lot of people in gyms who parade the ?perfect' body and that isn't necessarily what we want our children to grow up around."

Draper agreed parents needed to be wary of not creating too much emphasis on body image.

"There's a difference between being fit and healthy and becoming too concerned about bodies. It needs to be a balance of the physical and social benefits of exercise with education about positive body image."

Professor of psychology Lucy Johnston said making exercise fun, rather than a chore, was key. "The most important thing is enjoyment - it will best predict whether involvement in exercise persists across the lifespan."

Several weeks ago, we began to catch wind of a plan to delay the payment of so-called performance-based pay to NFL players. ?As it was initially explained, the move arises from efforts to pump up the salary cap.

Now, it?s being sold as a way to protect players from themselves, financially.

NFLPA spokesman George Atallah previously has acknowledged that the two-year delay will happen with the 2013 performance-based bay, for cap purposes. ?According to Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com, the performance-based pay of all players?will be held in escrow for two years ? in every remaining year of the CBA.

For clarity, the term ?performance-based pay? relates to one specific benefit, paid to players based on their playing time in relation to their compensation. ?A low-paid player who plays a lot, for example, gets a big check, like Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict, who went from undrafted to starting lineup. ?The term does not include incentives or contractual bonuses.

Freeman calls it a ?controversial and still hotly debated move? within the NFLPA, which resulted from an ?extremely close? vote of the union?s player representatives at their annual meeting earlier this month. ?The most surprising aspect of the move, from our perspective, is that it?s now apparently being characterized not as a shell game aimed at ensuring the salary cap will remain at desired levels while keeping earned money out of the players? hands for two years, but as a way to protect players from themselves.

It?s fitting, we suppose, given that the NFL has spent so much time over the past several years protecting players from themselves on the field. ?Now, the union can protect players from themselves off the field.

But that?s not fair to the guys who don?t take out $300,000 loans to throw birthday parties for themselves. ?That?s money that can be invested by the players who earned it. ?And if the players choose to make it rain or take it to the tables or light it all on fire and watch it burn, that?s their business.

The inalienable right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness necessarily includes a right to squander life, liberty, and/or happiness. ?Freedom includes the freedom to screw up, and when a group of men are being treated like children, that?s not good for anybody.

Then again, it?s possible that it?s all just clumsy cover for an effort to prop up the salary cap by keeping player money from the players on a two-year rolling basis. ?Regardless of the real reason, no union should be taking its members? money and putting it in a jar for two years, two months, two weeks, two days, or even two minutes.

Especially if the members don?t want that to happen.
