William Diamond, 74, music industry manager | SILive.com

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Former Staten Islander William J. Diamond, 74, a notable manager in the music business who worked tirelessly behind the scenes of some of the world's most renowned musicians, and whose family remembered him as a kind-hearted and gentle person, died Saturday in St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center in Manhattan.

Mr. Diamond grew up in a house on Crescent Avenue, New Brighton, with his father, Dr. Benjamin Diamond, mother, and brother. In 1951 Mr. Diamond moved with his family to Grymes Hill. He graduated from Curtis High School, and then enrolled at Cornell University. There, he earned a bachelor's degree in political science.

Mr. Diamond eventually moved to Manhattan and found his way into the music business. As a manager for over 40 years, he cemented himself as a strong and steady hand behind the scenes of such superstars as Paul McCartney, Cat Stevens, Grand Funk Railroad and Angela Bofill.

More recently he has been the business manager for Buffalo Rome, a country band out of Nashville currently on tour in China with the Shanghai Symphony.

Mr. Diamond was never one to claim the spotlight; his family and friends said he preferred to live a private, quiet life.

"He was known for his calm demeanor, kind heart and willingness to give credit to others for his hard work and generosity. He will be deeply missed," said Michael Visconti, a member of Buffalo Rome.

Mr. Diamond's cousin, Elaine Diamond Berman, echoed that sentiment as she recalled the wonderful moments they had together growing up.

"He had an infectious giggle, and not a mean bone in his body," she said.

Mr. Diamond is survived by his brother, Robert; his sister-in-law, Aletta Kipp Diamond; his Aunt Judy Diamond Cohen, and many cousins.

A service will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Meislohn-Silvie Funeral Home, Port Richmond. Burial will follow at United Hebrew Cemetery, Richmond.
