Start with passion and everything else is possible - Shore News Today

LINWOOD ? Karing with Kindness is a new neighbor to Gilda?s Club in their 700 New Road facility. Started in Toms River more than a decade ago to provide quality home health care owner Kathleen Kenny said she wanted to expand into Atlantic County and was looking for the best spot when she saw the space on New Road and knew they were ready to make the move.

Karing with Kindness really wears several hats in the healthcare spectrum. They are first and foremost a private vocational school providing training for certified nurse?s aides and certified home health aides. Kenny said she wants to know that each CNA or CHHA that she sends to a person?s home is properly trained and that they have the warmth and compassion that she would personally want a person to have that was working with her family members. The best way to do that is to train those healthcare workers. The owner said she is often asked what the requirements for her students are.

?It?s pretty simple, have the passion to help others and everything else will come along,? said Kenny.

The New Road facility is equipped with classrooms for instruction as well as rooms that are laid out like a hospital room and a nursing home room so each of the workers is accustomed to work environment prior to their going out on the required clinical rotations that Kenny arranges with several of the local long term care facilities.

?Most often our students get a job offer when they complete their clinical,? said Kenny.

But the owner said what is of utmost importance to her is that graduates from her program intrinsically have the capacity for respect and compassion of the people they are helping.

?The health care aids that Karing with Kindness sends to your home are givers and not takers. Our job is to help people to maintain their independence and allow them to be comfortable and safe in their own home,? said Kenny. ?It is a proven fact that older patients are happier and healthier if they are able to stay in their own home. We provide the reliable and dependable service they need to remain in their homes.?

Kenny said over the years her girls would say that a patient needed this supply or that and could we get them a lift chair, a hospital bed or bath safety items and that led her to become a certified agent for durable medical supplies. Their Linwood location has a room dedicated to those medical supplies.

Kenny has added two boutiques to their new location; a wig room and a room loaded with the supplies for women recovering from a mastectomy. Decorated in pink, lace, pearls and with the image of Audrey Hepburn glancing down from the wall the Power of Pink Room is a special spot.

?I had just finished setting up the room and a client came in and said they felt like they were in Victoria?s Secret and I knew I had accomplished what I set out to do with this room,? said Kenny. ?Every woman has the right to look good and be balanced and feel sexy. She is still the same woman she has always been; that did not change because her breast was removed.?

They carry prosthetics, camisoles, over 100 styles of bras including strapless and compression and supplies that women can wear even as they are just leaving the hospital.

?Part of the recovery process is to maintain your self image and we certainly are working to do that here,? added Kenny.

The wig boutique caters to women who have lost their hair from alopecia and chemotherapy.

Karing with Kindness is hoping to have their first class in the new Linwood location starting in November. They are accredited by the Veterans Administration, Medicaid and other insurance carriers.

Karing with Kindness workers are available for 2 hours or 24 hours a day to meet the patients and family?s needs. They are located at 700 New Road in Linwood, Next to Gilda?s Club and near City Hall. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., (609) 601-2150 or visit www.karingwithkindness.com.

T-Mobile, MetroPCS Merger Confirmed: U.S. Wireless Giants Boards ...

BERLIN (AP) ? Struggling cellphone companies T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS Communications are set to merge, in a deal that will create an operator with more than 40 million subscribers.

In a joint statement, the two companies said Wednesday that Deutsche Telekom AG, the owner of T-Mobile USA, will hold 74 percent of the new business, while MetroPCS's shareholders will hold the remainder, as well as receiving a payment of about $1.5 billion.

"The combined company, which will retain the T-Mobile name, will have the expanded scale, spectrum and financial resources to aggressively compete with the other national U.S. wireless carriers," the two said.

Both companies have struggled in the highly-competitive U.S. cellphone market.

And even after the combination with Dallas-based MetroPCS, which has 9.3 million subscribers, T-Mobile USA ? the country's fourth-largest cellphone company with 33.2 million subscribers ? will still trail the market's No. 3, Sprint Nextel Corp.

However, the deal would give T-Mobile USA, which is based in Bellevue, Washington, access to more space on the airwaves, a critical factor as cellphone carriers try to expand their capacity for wireless broadband.

Last year, AT&T struck a deal to buy T-Mobile USA for $39 billion for much the same reason. That was shot down by regulators, who believed competition would suffer if the second-largest cellphone company were to gobble up the fourth-largest.

"We are committed to creating a sustainable and financially viable national challenger in the U.S., and we believe this combination helps us deliver on that commitment," Deutsche Telekom chief executive officer Rene Obermann said.

Deutsche Telekom said the combined company would have revenues of around $24.8 billion based on analysts' estimates, and cost synergies are expected to be worth $6 to $7 billion.

The deal still has to be agreed by shareholders and will require regulatory approval.

The regulatory concerns this time round appear set to be much milder than the proposed deal involving AT&T. Both companies are relatively small, and T-Mobile USA has been losing subscribers for the last two years.

A linkup would be complicated by the fact that MetroPCS and T-Mobile USA use different network technologies. That means MetroPCS phones would not work on T-Mobile USA's network, and vice versa. However, both companies are deploying the same "fourth-generation" or "4G" technology, so they're on a path to harmonizing their networks.

Deutsche Telekom's CEO Obermann said the new company will have the "resources to expand its geographic coverage, broaden choice among all types of customers and continue to innovate, especially around the next-generation LTE network."

Germany's stock market was closed Wednesday because of a national holiday. But the prospect of seeing Deutsche Telekom finding a solution for its struggling U.S. business sent the stock higher Tuesday after both companies had confirmed their talks.

MetroPCS' shares shot up some 20 percent to $14.16 in New York on Tuesday.

APNewsBreak: Coke, Samsung pull Vietnam site ads

(AP) ? Coca-Cola and Samsung have pulled their advertising from a popular Vietnamese website notorious for providing unlicensed downloads of Western and local songs, in a rare victory against online piracy in a country where it has grown unchecked.

The companies abandoned Zing.vn after The Associated Press alerted them to local and international concerns about the website, which is the sixth-most visited in the nation of 87 million people.

Zing's audience of young, tech-savvy web users has made it attractive to companies wanting to promote their products in a fast-growing Asian market where some 30 million people are online. It was unclear if the companies were ignorant of the content of the site or chose to ignore it.

Besides Coca-Cola Co. and South Korea's Samsung, other multinationals that have advertised on Zing include Canon, Yamaha, Intel and Colgate Palmolive. Zing said in a statement it couldn't comment.

The presence of international advertising added to the legitimacy of Zing, causing particular anger among Vietnamese artists who felt the site was profiting from their work without compensating them. After being contacted by The AP, Samsung and Coca-Cola said in separate statements they had withdrawn their ads.

"We highly respect and value intellectual property rights, and stand against acts of infringement, such as the unauthorized copying and distribution of copyrighted material," Samsung, which was advertising its Galaxy tablet on Zing, said in a statement. "Accordingly, our advertisements on Zing.vn have been withdrawn."

Coca-Cola said it had stopped advertising on the site and would "investigate their practices before making further decisions."

The drinks company had an especially close association with site, which also features games, instant messaging and a social media network. In 2011, it collaborated with Zing on a music awards ceremony, according to Zing's website. A special site created for the campaign attracted close to 6 million people who visited 10 million times, according to the website.

The music industry in the United States has complained about well-known companies whose ads appear on illegal downloading sites and is trying to get them to stop such advertising. Those commercials are mostly placed by ad networks contracted by agencies working for the companies. In May, the Association of National Advertisers issued guidelines to its members urging them to try and prevent such placements.

The decision by Coca-Cola and Samsung could add impetus to efforts by Vietnamese web companies to clean up their act.

Vietnamese company MV Corp, which represents around half of the local music industry, says some of the biggest sites, including Zing, plan to begin charging for music on Nov. 1. But it is unclear whether the deal means they will take down their infringing material, or whether Western recording companies will take part.

Stopping rampant illegal downloading of songs is a priority for the music industry worldwide, but progress has been patchy as consumers get used to free music. As broadband internet connections have grown in Asia, the problem has gotten worse. Vietnam has passed laws against piracy, but has failed to enforce them, enabling sites like Zing to grow into respectable businesses.

Recording artists in Vietnam no longer can make money selling music. They have had to live with the reality of illegal downloading as they seek promotional opportunities or sponsorship to earn a living. Zing's giant reach was important to them even as it attracted complaints. One entertainment music executive complained bitterly about the site, but said that he couldn't publicly speak out against it because it would not highlight his company's songs.

Still, one of Vietnam's most popular singers, Le Quyen, has begun legal proceedings against Zing and eight other websites to try and get compensation, according to her lawyer Le Quang Vy.

"By complaining against the offending websites, she wants to get justice for herself and remind them that they owe the performers," he said. "If no halt is put to the violation of copyrights ... the country's musical life will perish."

Zing is owned by VNG Corporation, a Vietnamese Internet company that is the leader in the lucrative online gaming market. The company has attracted investment from IDG Ventures of San Francisco and Goldman Sachs.

Like others around the world, Zing collects links to infringing content and gives users the ability to engage in piracy through "deep linking". According to Alexa, the web tracking company, about 20 percent of Zing's visitors come from outside Vietnam. It said 60 percent of the traffic on the site goes to the download section.

The International Intellectual Property Alliance, which this year accused Zing.vn of engaging in "notorious" piracy, welcomed the move by Coca-Cola and Samsung.

"It is essential that good corporate citizens refrain from spending advertising dollars on services that engage in or encourage infringement," said alliance representative Michael Schlesinger. "Breaking the chain of support for such notorious piracy services will erode the incentives for illegal services to operate."

Harvin's 105-yarder sparks Vikes over Lions

By LARRY LAGE

updated 3:13 p.m. ET Sept. 30, 2012

DETROIT (AP) - Percy Harvin returned the opening kickoff 105 yards for a touchdown and Marcus Sherels scored on a punt return early in the third, helping the Minnesota Vikings beat the Detroit Lions 20-13 Sunday.

NFC North-leading Minnesota (3-1) matched the number of wins it had last season. The Vikings also snapped an 11-game losing streak within the division.

The Lions (1-3) have lost three straight, surpassing the longest skid by last year's playoff team.

Detroit has struggled with poor coverage on special teams.

The Lions are the first team since at least 1940 to give up a kickoff and a punt return for TDs in consecutive games, according to STATS LLC. They gave up scores on a kickoff and punt in last week's 44-41 loss in overtime at Tennessee.

Smartphone technology acceptable for telemedicine

ScienceDaily (Oct. 1, 2012) ? A new Mayo Clinic study confirms the use of smartphones medical images to evaluate stroke patients in remote locations through telemedicine. The study, the first to test the effectiveness of smartphone teleradiology applications in a real-world telestroke network, was recently published in Stroke, a journal of the American Heart Association.

"Essentially what this means is that telemedicine can fit in our pockets," says Bart Demaerschalk, M.D., professor of Neurology, and medical director of Mayo Clinic Telestroke. "For patients this means access to expertise in a timely fashion when they need it most, no matter what emergency room they may find themselves."

Mayo Clinic was the first medical center in Arizona to do pioneering clinical research to study telemedicine to serve patients with stroke in non-urban settings. Today, Mayo Clinic is the hub in a network of 12 other spoke centers, all but one in Arizona. In telestroke care, the use of telemedicine platforms or robots located in a rural hospital lets a stroke patient be seen in real time by a neurology specialist who typically is working from a desktop or laptop computer in Phoenix. The Mayo Clinic stroke neurologist, whose face appears on a computer screen, consults with emergency room physicians at the rural sites and evaluates the patient.

Patients showing signs of stroke can be examined by the neurologist who can also view scans of the patient's brain to detect possible damage from a hemorrhage or blocked artery. If necessary patients can be administered clot-busting medications within the narrow window of time necessary to minimize permanent injury to the brain. The study compared the quality of medical images using a particular smartphone application to the same types of information and images typically viewed via desktop computers. Mayo Clinic neurologists worked with emergency physicians and radiologists at Yuma Regional Medical Center to compare brain scan images from 53 patients who came to that medical center with stroke.

The scans were reviewed by radiologists in Yuma and a separate adjudication panel of stroke neurologists to determine the level of agreement between these traditional interpretation routes and new images and scans on smartphones interpreted by telestroke doctors. The study shows there was a high level of agreement (92 to 100 percent) among all the reviewers over the most important radiological features.

"Smartphones are ubiquitous, they are everywhere," Dr. Demaerschalk says. "If we can transmit health information securely and simultaneously use the video conferencing capabilities for clinical assessments, we can have telemedicine anywhere, which is essential in a state like Arizona where more than 40 percent of the population doesn't have access to immediate neurologic care."

The study was funded by the Arizona Department of Health Services and the technology and technical assistance was provided by Calgary Scientific, the maker of ResolutionMD. The Mayo Clinic Telestroke Network includes hospitals in Kingman, Flagstaff, Parker, Cottonwood, Show Low, Globe, Yuma, Bisbee, Casa Grande, Tuba City and Phoenix, all in Arizona; and a hospital in St. Joseph, Mo. To date, more than 1,000 emergency consultations have taken place for stroke between Mayo Clinic stroke neurologists and physicians at the spoke centers. Such comprehensive evaluation techniques lead to appropriate life-saving treatment for stroke, and have resulted in significant cost reductions by not requiring ground or air ambulance transfer of the patient to another medical center.

First debate jitters? Obama, Romney camps maneuver for advantage (+video)

As Barack Obama and Mitt Romney rehearse for their first big debate Wednesday, both sides are playing the expectations game. Given recent polls, there?s more pressure on Romney to perform.

President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney both campaigned in the battleground state of Ohio last week. Fierce and determined competitors, Obama and Romney each have a specific mission for the string of three debates that starts Wednesday night.

The scene was on full array on the Sunday TV blabfests.

"At the end of the debate Wednesday night, Romney has to be a clear alternative," Romney?s former GOP rival Newt Gingrich advised on CBS?s "Face the Nation.?

"He doesn't have to hit a home run,? the former House Speaker said. ?But Romney has to be, at the end of the debate Wednesday night, a clear alternative who is considered as a potential president by a majority of the American people in order for his campaign to have a chance to live."

That last dark phrase ? ?to have a chance to live? ? implies a steep uphill path for Mr. Romney, who remains behind in most national and state polls.

Acknowledging that Romney has had ?a tough couple of week,? New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie put more positive spin on how the Republican challenger will do Wednesday night and where the race is headed.

"That's where he shines," Gov. Christie said, also speaking on CBS. "He's going to lay out his vision for America, and for the first time a majority of the people who are going to vote in this race will have an opportunity to make that direct comparison."

"This whole race is going to turn upside down come Thursday morning," he said ? implying, as Gingrich did, that Romney?s pre-debate position does not portend victory in November.

?We've had some missteps, but at the end of the day, the choice is really clear and we're giving people a very clear choice,? Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney?s running mate, said on ?Fox News Sunday.?

Still, Rep. Ryan sought to downplay the importance of the debate.

?I don?t think one event is going to make or break this campaign,? he said. ?Look, President Obama is a very gifted speaker. The man?s been on the national stage for many years, he?s an experienced debater, he?s done these kinds of debates before. This is Mitt?s first time on this kind of a stage.?

Still, as Fox News host Chris Wallace pointed out, Romney did endure 23 debates during the primary campaign, and he?s been running for president non-stop since before the 2008 election.
