Almost one in three U.S. TV households have four or more sets, according to a new report from Nielsen.
"TV maintains its stronghold as the most popular device, with 290 million Americans and 114.7 households owning at least one," says the research firm in a new report, "State of the Media: Consumer Usage Report."? In contrast, Nielsen notes, "211 million Americans are online and 116 million (ages 13+) access the mobile Web."
The report comes just in time for next week's Consumer Electronics Show, which will feature a variety of TVs, some "smart," some not so much, that manufacturers hope will take your breath ? and dollars ? away in the year ahead. Among the offerings are large-sized sets featuring OLED screens, such as the 55-inch set announced recently by LG, and Google's renewed efforts?at GoogleTV 2.0, after a bumpy start this past year.
While 288 million of us continue to watch TV the traditional way ? as in, sitting in front of the set ? more of us are also choosing other ways to get our fix:
- 143 million are watching TV on the Internet.
- 111 million watch "time-shifted" TV, via DVRs, an increase of 11 percent since 2010, Nielsen says.
- 30 million are watching TV using their cellphones.
The DVD player also remains a staple as the No. 2 device for 253 million Americans, followed by video game consoles, owned by 162 million.
Despite some reluctance by many consumers to move to even newer TV sets, Nielsen says there is a worldwide market out there: Among 25,000 consumers surveyed in 56 countries by the research firm, 23 percent are interested in both 3-D sets and those that can connect to the Internet:
