Unmet Needs of Veterans with Psychological Injuries Reaches Epidemic Proportions with Rise in Suicide & Sexual Assault

Join 30 top mind-body healing experts in exploring new alternatives for veterans dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) & in addressing unique challenges faced by female veterans.

Rhinebeck, NY (PRWEB) September 29, 2012

As reported by the New York Times, [45 percent of veterans that have served in Iraq or Afghanistan are now requesting support for their injuries, in many instances psychological injuries. President Obama recently stated that we are losing more troops to suicide than we are losing in combat, calling the issue an epidemic and demanding that ?we?ve got to do better.? Additionally, there has been a 97% increase in sexual assault in the military over the past five years, creating trauma in female veterans.

In response to the rise in unmet health needs of returning veterans, Omega Institute is convening an unprecedented gathering of experts in trauma and the treatment of trauma for veterans using complementary and alternative medicine. Veterans, Trauma & Treatment?Best Mind-Body Practices: A Professional Conference Addressing Resiliency to Recovery will be held October 12?14, 2012 on Omega?s campus in Rhinebeck, New York, and is intended for healthcare professionals, psychologists, social workers, caregivers, and counselors assisting veterans battling with PTSD and their families. Omega will also offer additional programs in addressing combat-related issues through yoga therapy, and will hold two healing retreats to address the specific needs of female veterans.

?We see a critical need to support returning vets beyond what the current system is equipped to provide. The road to healing from the trauma of war is complex, and we are honored to be working with some of the nation?s most forward-thinking health experts and veterans? advocates, to collaborate on best practices in healing modalities in an effort to help more veterans get treatment, more quickly,? said Carla Goldstein, chief external affairs officer at Omega.

The conference will also touch on resilience studies, and some remarkable trauma prevention work being undertaken with combat and noncombat soldiers. Join Jon Kabat-Zinn, Bessel van der Kolk, Peter A. Levine, officers and retired officers from the United States Army, Navy, and Air Force, and other extraordinary leaders who offer creative solutions to the myriad problems that come with PTSD. For a complete list of presenters, visit eOmega.org/veterans.

For more than 20 years, Omega has been engaged with veterans and family members dealing with issues of PTSD. Following this groundbreaking conference for professionals, Omega will offer additional workshops for veterans, including:

Teaching Yoga in Military Communities, Part 2: Advanced Teaching Skills for Addressing Combat-Related Issues

October 14?19. Professional training for yoga teachers. Participants need to complete Part 1 (teleseminar) before attending Part 2.

As the United States military adopts more evidence-based, mind-body approaches and seeks to hire competent instructors, specialized training focused on military culture and combat-related conditions will be a great benefit. This 5-day certification program for yoga teachers provides a solid foundation in the art and science of teaching yoga in a military setting. Seasoned teachers, with medical, mental health, and military backgrounds, who have significant experience teaching yoga to servicemen and servicewomen, will train teachers in the effective use of yoga for post-deployment physical and psychological conditions.

Military & Veteran Women?s Healing Retreat(s)

October 14?19 (already full) and a second retreat October 22?26 (space still available). This program, including room and board, is available at no cost to qualified female veterans or active duty women in the military.

With the alarming rise in sexual assault in the military, and many other unique challenges, the wounds of war often run deeper and longer for female veterans. Major (fmr) Nisha Money, former chief of United States Air Force Fitness, and a team of healing arts therapists, along with financial, employment, and life-skill reintegration experts, will guide attendees through a variety of holistic healing modalities and other helpful resources. Google Field Trip serves as virtual tour guide

3 hrs.

Google's new Field Trip app is a virtual local tour guide that's always running in the background. It pops up interesting local information???from local history and architecture to the best restaurants and shopping???without you having to ask for it.

After you choose whether you want just occasional notifications or frequent ones, Field Trip runs quietly in the background, looking for anything notable around you. The app pulls in information from a ton of sources, including Zagat and Eater in the food and drinks category; Architizer for architecture; and The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations and Atlas Obscura for unique (and possibly bizarre) finds.

When it finds something, Field Trip notifies you with a ringtone and/or vibration. It can even read the title and description to you. View the event, place, or thing on a map and read more about it within the app. You can also choose to get more or fewer notifications from individual sources.

The Android?app has a really pleasant interface and definitely encourages you to step out and go explore (as the video above suggests). Google says the app is like having a local friend with you as you explore a city. You can download this virtual friend on Google Play now; an iOS version is coming soon.?

NOTE:?If Google Play?says?your phone is incompatible, it might not really be. I got the incompatibility warning too on my Galaxy S2, but was able to download it directly from the phone and it works!

Electronics that vanish in the environment or the body

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Physicians and environmentalists alike could soon be using a new class of electronic devices: small, robust and high performance, yet also biocompatible and capable of dissolving completely in water -- or in bodily fluids.

Researchers at the University of Illinois, in collaboration with Tufts University and Northwestern University, have demonstrated a new type of biodegradable electronics technology that could introduce new design paradigms for medical implants, environmental monitors and consumer devices.

"We refer to this type of technology as transient electronics," said John A. Rogers, the Lee J. Flory-Founder Professor of Engineering at the U. of I., who led the multidisciplinary research team. "From the earliest days of the electronics industry, a key design goal has been to build devices that last forever -- with completely stable performance. But if you think about the opposite possibility -- devices that are engineered to physically disappear in a controlled and programmed manner -- then other, completely different kinds of application opportunities open up."

Three application areas appear particularly promising. First are medical implants that perform important diagnostic or therapeutic functions for a useful amount of time and then simply dissolve and resorb in the body. Second are environmental monitors, such as wireless sensors that are dispersed after a chemical spill, that degrade over time to eliminate any ecological impact. Third are consumer electronic systems or sub-components that are compostable, to reduce electronic waste streams generated by devices that are frequently upgraded, such as cellphones or other portable devices.

Transient electronic systems harness and extend various techniques that the Rogers' group has developed over the years for making tiny, yet high performance electronic systems out of ultrathin sheets of silicon. In transient applications, the sheets are so thin that they completely dissolve in a few days when immersed in biofluids. Together with soluble conductors and dielectrics, based on magnesium and magnesium oxide, these materials provide a complete palette for a wide range of electronic components, sensors, wireless transmission systems and more.

The team has built transient transistors, diodes, wireless power coils, temperature and strain sensors, photodetectors, solar cells, radio oscillators and antennas, and even simple digital cameras. All of the materials are biocompatible and, because they are extraordinarily thin, they can dissolve in even minute volumes of water.

The researchers encapsulate the devices in silk. The structure of the silk determines its rate of dissolution -- from minutes, to days, weeks or, potentially, years.

"The different applications that we are considering require different operating time frames," Rogers said. "A medical implant that is designed to deal with potential infections from surgical site incisions is only needed for a couple of weeks. But for a consumer electronic device, you'd want it to stick around at least for a year or two. The ability to use materials science to engineer those time frames becomes a critical aspect in design."

Since the group uses silicon, the industry standard material for integrated circuits, they can make highly sophisticated devices in ways that exploit well-established designs by introducing just a few additional tricks in layout, manufacturing and supporting materials. As reported in the Sept. 28 issue of the journal Science, the researchers have already demonstrated several system-level devices, including a fully transient 64-pixel digital camera and an implantable applique designed to monitor and prevent bacterial infection at surgical incisions, successfully demonstrated in rats.

Next, the researchers are further refining these and other devices for specific applications, conducting more animal tests, and working with a semiconductor foundry to explore high-volume manufacturing possibilities.

"It's a new concept, so there are lots of opportunities, many of which we probably have not even identified yet" Rogers said. "We're very excited. These findings open up entirely new areas of application, and associated directions for research in electronics."

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency supported this work. The Tufts University team was led by Fiorenzo Omenetto; the Northwestern University team was led by Youggang Huang. Rogers is affiliated with the departments of materials science and engineering, of chemistry, of mechanical science and engineering, of bioengineering and of electrical and computer engineering, and with the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory at the U. of I.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) ? President Barack Obama pledged to create many more jobs and "make the middle class secure again" in a campaign-closing appeal on Thursday ? more than five weeks before Election Day ? to voters already casting ballots in large numbers.

Republican Mitt Romney, focusing on threats beyond American shores, accused the commander in chief of backing dangerous cuts in defense spending.

"The idea of cutting our military is unthinkable and devastating. And when I become president we will not," declared the challenger, struggling to reverse a slide in opinion polls.

Romney and Obama campaigned a few hundred miles apart in Virginia, 40 days before their long race ends. They'll be in much closer quarters next Wednesday in Denver ? for the first of three presidential debates on the campaign calendar and perhaps the challenger's best remaining chance to change the trajectory of the campaign.

In a race where the economy is the dominant issue, there was a fresh sign of national weakness as the Commerce Department lowered its earlier estimate of tepid growth last spring. Romney and his allies seized on the news as evidence that Obama's policies aren't working.

There was good news for the president in the form of a survey by The Washington Post and Kaiser Family Foundation suggesting he has gained ground among older voters after a month-long ad war over Republican plans for Medicare.

The pace also was quickening in the struggle for control of the U.S. Senate.

Prominent Republican conservatives pledged financial and political support for Rep. Todd Akin in Missouri. That complicated Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill's bid for re-election. But it also left Romney, running mate Paul Ryan and the rest of the GOP hierarchy in an awkward position after they tried unsuccessfully to push Akin off the ballot in the wake of his controversial comments about rape.

Farther west, in Arizona, Republican Rep. Jeff Flake unleashed an ad calling Democratic rival Richard Carmona "Barack Obama's rubberstamp." It was not meant as a compliment in a state seemingly headed Romney's way, a response for sure to Democratic claims that the Senate contest was unexpectedly close.

In the presidential race, early voting has already begun in Virginia as well as South Dakota, Idaho and Vermont. It began during the day in Wyoming as well as in Iowa, like Virginia one of the most highly contested states. Early voters had formed a line a half block long in Des Moines before the elections office opened at 8 a.m.

Campaigning in Virginia Beach, Obama said, "It's time for a new economic patriotism, an economic patriotism rooted in the belief that growing our economy begins with a strong and thriving middle class." It was a line straight from the two-minute television commercial his campaign released overnight.

He said that if re-elected he would back policies to create a million new manufacturing jobs, help businesses double exports and give tax breaks to companies that "invest in America, not ship jobs overseas." He pledged to cut oil imports in half while doubling the fuel efficiency of cars and trucks, make sure there are 100,000 new teachers trained in math and science, cut the growth of college tuition in half and expand student aid "so more Americans can afford it."

He also touted a "balanced plan to reduce the deficit by $4 trillion," but he included $1 trillion in reductions that already have taken place, and he took credit for saving half of the funds budgeted for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that no longer are needed.

Obama also said he would "ask the wealthy to pay a little more," a reference to the tax increase he favors on incomes over $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples. It is perhaps his most fundamental disagreement on policy with Romney, who wants to extend expiring tax cuts at all levels, including the highest.

Obama's campaign put out a second, scathing commercial during the day based on Romney's recorded comments from last May that 47 percent of Americans don't pay income taxes and feel they are victims entitled to government benefits. Romney added that as a candidate his job is not to worry about them.

In the ad, Romney's by-now well-known comments are heard as images scroll by of a white woman with two children in a rural setting, a black woman wearing workplace safety goggles, two older white men wearing Veterans of Foreign Wars hats; a Latino, and finally a white woman with safety goggles ? each of them meant to portray millions whom Romney described dismissively in the appearance before donors four months ago.

Romney countered with two new ads of his own, including one that appeared designed to minimize political fallout from the videotape.

"President Obama and I both care about poor and middle-class families," he says in a direct appeal to voters. "The difference is my policies will make things better for them. We shouldn't measure compassion by how many people are on welfare. We should measure compassion by how many people are able to get off welfare and get a good-paying job."

The second ad pointed to comments Obama made four years ago when he said he would support proposals to raise the cost of business for facilities than run on coal. "So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them," the then-presidential candidate is seen saying.

The narrator adds: "Obama wages war on coal while we lose jobs to China, which is using more coal every day. Now your job is in danger."

Romney campaigned at an American Legion hall in Springfield, Va., a suburb of Washington, D.C., accusing Obama of supporting cuts in the defense budget that would be detrimental to the nation's military readiness.

"The world is not a safe place. It remains dangerous," he said, referring to North Korea, Syria, Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan. "The idea of cutting our military commitment by a trillion dollars over this decade is unthinkable and devastating."

Appealing for support from his audience, he said, "You realize we have fewer ships in the Navy than any time since 1917. ... Our Air Force is older and smaller than any time since 1947, when it was formed. This is unacceptable. And the idea of shrinking our active duty personnel by 100,000 or 200,000 ? I want to add 100,000 to active duty personnel."

To have a strong military, he said, it's imperative to have a strong economy, yet he added that growth in China and Russia is stronger than in the United States. He predicted that under Obama, there would be no improvement.

"So two -- two very different paths. One is the path the president's proposed, which is the status quo. His is the path of -- well, he calls it 'forward.' I call it 'forewarned.' All right? All right?

The $1 trillion Romney mentioned in defense cuts had the support of Republicans and Democrats alike in Congress, although he says GOP lawmakers made a mistake in voting for the reductions and several now want to prevent them from taking effect.

How to throw a kids' party without blowing your budget | Baby ...

Guest Post by Vivienne Egan

As any parent will tell you, kids? parties are getting pretty competitive these days. From 10-year-olds being shuttled back and forth to spa days in limousines to helicopter rides around the houses of Parliament, it seems that every party is more outrageously expensive than the last, until it begins to feel that it?s less about the kids themselves and more about the adults making a splash.

So in the interests of having birthday parties that are both enjoyable for the kids and won?t break the bank, here are ten five ideas for cost-effective parties:

1. Make the cake yourself
Besides being from the heart, making your child?s birthday cake can be really fun and far cheaper than getting a cake from the shop or made specially. There are plenty of creative ways to make a personalised cake with a bit of colourful icing and decorations.

2. Host the party at home
If it?s feasible, at home is the most cost-effective venue. If your house is not large, suggest party themes that can be accommodated, such as a sleepover for close friends only.

3. Ask family and close friends to help with catering
If you have a good network of family and friends nearby who are attending the party, ask if they can contribute a plate. Sausage rolls, mini-cupcakes and crisps for the kids and cheese, olives and dips for the adults.

4. DIY party games are always the most fun
Pin the tail on the donkey, duck duck goose, eating donuts from strings on the clothesline, pass the parcel. The old ones are the good ones, and can be achieved with the simplest of materials.

5. Get a family friend to be a special guest
A fairy, a clown, a pirate or a super hero ? you don?t have to hire a professional to be a special guest. An older cousin or a neighbour might be happy to dress up for an hour.

The most important thing for a child?s birthday party is for your kids and their friends to have a great time. Thought and effort will make a far bigger impact than throwing a lot of money at a party. Kids will remember fun, laughter and playing games much more than glitz, glam and cash.

What are your best tips for throwing a cost-effective party? What is the most lavish kids? party you have ever attended?

House of Pain

Nancy Pelosi answers questions during her weekly news conference at the U.S. Capitol last week in Washington, DC.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi

A few weeks ago in Charlotte, I sat down in the Huffington Post Oasis? yoga studio and listened to Rep. Nancy Pelosi describe how she?d get her old job back. Democrats needed 25 seats to take back control of the House. ?We?re going to get them,? she said.

With no PowerPoint, no chalkboard?not even a calculator?Pelosi proceeded to bring the math. ?There are 63 seats which are held by Republicans which were won by President Obama,? she explained. ?Of those 63 seats, 18 were also won by John Kerry. There are those who count that as 18 [for us]. We don?t. Give them six. We?ll take 12. Of the 45 remaining, give them 30. I think that?s generous. That?s the worst-case scenario. Fifteen plus 12, that?s 27.?

Could it be that simple? Almost. ?There are districts where people are, shall we say, ethically challenged, and we believe we have excellent chances to win,? Pelosi said. What about her party? ?We believe that any Democrats who could survive the year from hell have a good chance of winning again.? (She is referring to the ?shellacking? of 2010.) And where would the new seats come from? ?In California, New York, Illinois, and Texas, we have half of what we need.?

It was the best spin Democrats could come up with. Nobody in the room?reporters, bloggers, reporter-bloggers?looked terribly convinced. We were in North Carolina, where less than a mile away Republicans were mocking one of Pelosi?s ?year from hell? survivors by renting an Uber car and daring Rep. Larry Kissell to ride it into Charlotte. If Democrats were so sure they?d win the House, well, what was Kissell waiting for?

Weeks later, ever since the Charlotte Democrats emptied their confetti cannons, the election?s been breaking their way. Barack Obama leads Mitt Romney outside the margin of error; swing-state polling has him winning around 330 electoral votes. For the first time all year, Obama?s party looks likely to keep control of the U.S. Senate.

But Democrats aren?t winning the House. The Cook Political Report, which meticulously tracks and rates House races, pegs the maximum Democratic gain at eight seats. At this point in 2010, it was predicting Republican gains in the high 40s, and the party wound up with 63 new seats. The Fix, Chris Cillizza?s election bible, gives Democrats the advantage in 182 seats and rates 27 more as ?toss-ups.? If Democrats won them all, they?d still by eight seats short.

And any schmuck could have warned you years ago that this would happen. In 2010, Republicans predicted that a broad election win?one that gave them most state legislatures?would keep the House for a decade. ?It could end up translating into control of 15 to 25 U.S. House seats for the next five cycles,? said Ed Gillespie, co-founder of the polling and strategy group Resurgent Republic and who spent endless hours counseling Republicans on the down-ballot challenge. (He?s now flacking his heart out for Romney.)

The Republican advantage was tremendous. Most states give the power of the map to whomever happens to run the legislature. As 2011 began, Democrats only controlled the redistricting process for 47 seats?safe blue turf like Maryland and Illinois, which they squeezed for every possible gain. They had to. Republicans controlled the process for 202 seats. The Democrats had built the Pelosi house in states like Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. Then they lost everything, and the other guys got to draw the maps.

?Republicans weren?t thinking ?Hey, just how do we draw these lines to screw over Democrats?? ? says John McHenry, a pollster at Resurgent Republic. ?It was, ?How do we make this suburban Philadelphia seat safer for the Republican who just won it?? The goal wasn?t so much to add seats as it was to hold on to the 2010 gains.?

Republicans and independent analysts figure that the new maps will save at least a dozen seats. In state after state, they followed the same pattern: Create more safe suburban districts and pack the Democrats into a couple of twisty gerrymanders. North Carolina, which narrowly voted for Obama in 2008, is now structured to elect Republicans in at least nine of 13 seats. (This explains that Uber for Kissell.)

Expedition to the Greenland Sea with surprising results

Frequent storms and sub-zero temperatures nature drove the marine researchers that were assessing gas outlets on the sea bed off the coast of Spitsbergen for four and a half weeks to their limits. Nevertheless the participants were very pleased when they returned: "We were able to gather many samples and data in the affected area. With the submersible JAGO we even managed to form an impression of the sea bed and the gas vents" summarised the chief scientist Professor Dr. Christian Berndt from GEOMAR | Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel.

The reason for the expedition was the supposition that ice-like methane hydrates stored in the sea bed were dissolving due to rising water temperatures. "Methane hydrate is only stable at very low temperatures and under very high pressure. The gas outlets off Spitsbergen lie approximately at a depth which marks the border between stability and dissolution. Therefore we presumed that a measurable rise in water temperature in the Arctic could dissolve the hydrates from the top downwards" explained Professor Berndt. Methane could then be released into the water or even into the atmosphere, where it would act as a much stronger greenhouse gas than CO2.

In fact, what the researchers found in the area offers a much more differentiated picture. Above all the fear that the gas emanation is a consequence of the current rising sea temperature does not seem to apply. At least some of the gas outlets have been active for longer. Carbonate deposits, which form when microorganisms convert the escaping methane, were found on the vents. "At numerous emergences we found deposits that might already be hundreds of years old. This estimation is indeed only based on the size of the samples and empirical values as to how fast such deposits grow. On any account, the methane sources must be older" says Professor Berndt. The exact age of the carbonates will be determined from samples in GEOMAR's laboratories.

"Details will only be known in a few months when the data has been analysed; however the observed gas emanations are probably not caused by human influence" says Berndt. There are two other possible explanations instead: Either they are symptoms of a long term temperature rise or they show a seasonal process where gas hydrates continuously melt and reform.

Another interesting observation made on the expedition, was that a very active microbial community that consumes the methane has established itself on the sea bed. "We were able to detect high concentrations of hydrogen sulphide, which is an indication of methane consuming microbes in the sea bed, and, with the help of JAGO, discovered typical biocoenoses that we recognised from other, older methane outlets" explained microbiologist Professor Dr. Tina Treude from GEOMAR, who also took part in the expedition. "Methane consuming microbes grow only slowly in the sea bed, thus their high activity indicates that the methane has not just recently begun effervescing."

Colleagues from Bremen, Switzerland, Great Britain and Norway worked alongside marine scientists from GEOMAR and from the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean". "The study of the gas outlets in the Norwegian Sea is a good example for combined European research" stressed Professor Berndt. Hence German scientists recovered an ocean floor observatory, installed by the British research vessel James Clark Ross a year ago during a joint expedition of the National Oceanography Centre Southampton and the Institut franais de recherche pour l'exploitation de la mer (Ifremer). "Understanding the ocean as a system is a challenge that only works in international co-operations" emphasized Berndt. The analysis of the gathered data will also be carried out internationally.

Mohali, September 22
The Department of Punjab Rural Development and Panchayats has started registering criminal cases against persons who have illegally acquired chunks of ?shamlat? (common) land in various villages across the state.

Balwinder Singh Multani, Director of the department, said at least 10 cases were registered under Section 13-A of the Punjab Village Common Land Act, 1961, by the Rural Development Department recently.

?There is a provision of serving a maximum sentence of two years imprisonment in such cases,? Multani said, adding that the department had prepared a list of several other persons who were in illegal possession of the common land.

The official said the department was determined on the issue and had already retrieved several acres of land under illegal possession.

Recently, a chunk of 719 acres of land in Patiala district was freed and restored to the respective panchayats, he added.

Multani admitted that over 1,283 ?kabza? (possession) warrants were yet to be executed.

?My first priority is to execute these warrants as early as possible and restore the encroached land to the respective panchayats,? said Multani.

?The results will come soon,? he assured.

PFT: Ex-NFL ref says replacements doing 'good job'

Chandler Jones, Kevin KolbAP

We mentioned earlier in the week this was a big weekend for the Jones family, as?Jon defends his UFC light heavyweight belt tonight, while Chandler and Arthur face off in tomorrow night?s Patriots-Ravens game.

But the struggles they?ve faced throughout life, and continue to, makes their story about more than an athletic coincidence.

?All of this hasn?t dawned on me yet,? Jon Jones told Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com about his family?s success. ?We?re all still at the very young stages of our careers. I have this thing where I?m really big against complacency, so I don?t want accept the attitude like, ?We did it!? because we haven?t done it yet. Things could go wrong. You?re on top of the world one year and the next you?re borrowing money.

?I think there?s much more to come, but I am really happy for my parents. They can look at this being a success story at this point.?

Arthur II and Camille Jones? boys have made names for themselves, after struggling through tragedies in their younger years, and fighting to make things easier for their parents.

Their oldest sister Carmen died of brain cancer at age 18, and all helped with her care during her struggle.

Now, they?re paying back their mother for the years she looked after them.

Camille Jones has lost almost all her sight because of complications of diabetes. She?s also on dialysis and awaits a kidney transplant.

Chandler?s paying for her medical insurance, while Jon?s hired a nurse and a chef to help their parents, who moved them out of a rough neighborhood to the small town of Endicott, N.Y. as children. ?I remember my dad telling our family we were going so we could have a better life,? Jon said.

Their parents will be in Toronto for Jon?s fight tonight, then head to Baltimore to see the other two. And for all they?ve been through, they try to keep things in perspective.

?Life hasn?t changed that much,? Arthur Jones II said. ?People at the church are very happy for me, but there?s no big brouhaha of, ?That?s Mr. Jones. He?s a famous dad.?

With Jon one of the top fighters in the world, and Chandler emerging as a contributor for the Patriots as a first-round pick, that could be changing, soon.

But as impressive is the way the family has banded together for each other.

(AP) ? Lawyers for players on the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames are trying to have the NHL lockout declared illegal under Alberta law.

The NHL has argued before the Alberta Labour Relations Board that a league spanning two countries cannot operate under different laws for each team.

About a half dozen players attended the hearing, including Oilers forward Sam Gagner, goaltender Devan Dubnyk and veteran Ryan Smyth.

The lockout began last weekend and some players are already signing with European teams for the season. There have been no formal talks between the two sides since Sept. 12. Training camps were to have opened Friday. The league has already canceled preseason games through Sept. 30.

NHLPA lawyer Bob Blair told the panel that the two teams are Alberta businesses, so provincial labor laws must be followed.

"No one gets to choose what labor laws apply to them in this province," Blair said. "The law is the law is the law."

He said players from the Oilers and Flames never agreed to forgo their rights under the Alberta Labour Code.

"It applies to every employer and employee," he said. "That is the starting point."

NHL lawyer Peter Gall pointed out that 23 of the 30 teams are in the United States and work under the same rules because labor laws there are federally regulated.

"So all of the players on all of the teams have been included in one bargaining unit," Gall said. "The NHLPA has never bargained with individual teams. It has only bargained with the NHL."

Bill Daly, the league's deputy commissioner, told the panel there has never been individual bargaining between players and their teams. He said it's important all teams operate under the same rules.

Blair countered by saying the way the league and union operated in the past is irrelevant.

It's unclear what might follow if the board were to rule in favor of the NHLPA's request, but Daly said he couldn't imagine the fallout if that were to happen.

"It would be extremely destabilizing to how we do business and how we conduct this sports league," he said. "I don't know how we would proceed in the face of separate units in Alberta."

Last week, players from the Montreal Canadiens launched a similar case in Quebec. The labor board there turned down their request for a temporary injunction against the lockout, but also ruled that more hearings are needed to make a final decision on the application. No date for those hearings has been set.

The two sides remain far apart on key economic issues.

The NHL believes too much money is being paid in salaries and has proposed a system to address it. Its most recent offer called for the players' share in revenue to be set at 49 percent next season ? down from 57 percent in the deal that expired last weekend ? and proposed that it drops to 47 percent by the end of the six-year deal.

The union tabled an offer in which the salary cap would be set to fixed increases of 2 percent, 4 percent and 6 percent over the next three years. The system would then revert to a percentage-based system for the final two years.

"Everybody wants to play," Tampa Bay Lightning coach Guy Boucher said Friday night at the Toronto-Tampa Bay baseball game "Everybody wants to get going. There's goodwill on both sides. I'm sure they'll find a way, and hopefully it's quick. I have faith the players and owners, that they'll find a way. ... I'd be a liar to say that I'm not afraid. I'm staying very positive."

Case Study: My Experience With Equipment ? ArticleJetmix ...

How to Rent Home Improvement Equipment

Are you feeling like your living space and home is started to wear on you? Do you need a spruce up, or a fun project to occupy your time? Whether you want to do some landscaping work, put in new counters, or build an addition, you may feel like you can?t complete your project because you don?t have the right equipment. But don?t worry; there is a solution to your problem. Using an equipment rental company is the answer to your problems. You can use these companies to make your home project dream a reality. Keep reading below to learn more about equipment rental.

The first step to renting equipment is to decide exactly what you will need for your project. For example, are you working outside or indoors, at night or during the day? You may need lights if you work outside during the night, or a generator. If you have a day job, darkness may be an inevitability while you work on your project.

Make sure to assess what tools you will need. You can even rent power tools, if you don?t have what you need. Renting for this one time project is much more practical, especially if you can?t justify the cost of purchasing tools in the long run.

What is the next step in assessing equipment rental companies? You may want to start by looking through your local yellow pages or by doing a basic search online. You will want to find out more specific information, though. First of all, what are the rates the equipment rental company charges? Then look at what the prices include. What are the lengths of time you can rent items for? You may only need some items one day, and other items you may want to have for the duration of your home improvement project.

Also, consider if you want to have the items delivered right to you or if you will go get them from the business?s location. It may be difficult to move some items of equipment by yourself, like a large generator. It is a good idea to read online reviews of the company as well. Look into whether previous customers have been satisfied with their experience of renting equipment from this specific business.

After you have decided where you will rent from, make sure the equipment is all in good shape before signing the rental contract. Pay attention to anything that is damaged or scratched before you take it, because you will be responsible for the care of the equipment while you have it. Hopefully you can now get started on that home improvement project after learning more about equipment rental.

Compact body scanner ready for space station

16 hrs.

Handheld?"tricorders" from "Star Trek" remain just a science fiction fantasy for astronauts who need advanced medical care in space. But a new version of full-body scanning technology has the right size and power requirements to possibly fit aboard the International Space Station.

The smaller, cheaper version of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine could provide "slice" images of astronauts' bodies to improve studies of human health in space ? issues such as bone and muscle loss in low-gravity environments or the effects of deep-space radiation. Space explorers living on moon bases or traveling to Mars could also benefit from having such medical technology available during missions lasting for months or years.

"I would like to build a facility-class, whole-body-sized MRI," said Gordon Sarty, acting chairman of the biomedical engineering division at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. "Such a project would require an agreement between the ISS space agencies."

The compact MRI could weigh less than a ton ? one-twentieth of a ton for a smaller version that scans arms and legs ? and would require far less power than traditional MRI. Costs for the full-body MRI could drop from $2 million to as low as $200,000.

Sarty presented his team's compact MRI technology at AIAA Space 2012, a conference organized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, on Sept. 13. He hopes to win funding from the Canadian Space Agency to launch the machine to the space station around 2020.

MRI machines work by using radiofrequency coils to broadcast signals to the human body and receive return signals to build an image of the body's innards. Gradient coils control the machine's magnetic field to produce the precise "slice" images of certain parts of the body.

But MRI technology has limits that would make it both difficult and risky to operate on the space station. Typical MRI machines weigh about 11 tons or more because they rely upon heavy superconducting magnets cooled by liquid helium, and also create stray magnetic fields that could interfere with the space station's operations. Another problem comes from the MRI gradient coils' need to consume huge amounts of power in short bursts. [8 Surprising High-Tech Uses for Helium]

"These characteristics make it impractical and potentially dangerous to take a conventional MRI into space," Sarty told InnovationNewsDaily.

Compact MRI uses two different technologies to get around such problems. First, it uses a permanent Halbach magnet that is lighter than the superconducting magnet and does not create stray magnetic fields outside the magnet. Second, the compact MRI eliminates the power-hungry gradient coils by using Transmit Array Spatial Encoding (TRASE) that encodes images through the radiofrequency coil alone.

The smaller MRI technology has many uses far beyond space ? it could improve overall medical care on Earth by making the cheaper machines available around the world. Its smaller size could also lead to easier use of MRIs in battlefield hospitals or distant parts of the world with limited space and power.

Many of the new technology's pieces have already fallen into place. Halbach magnets have shown they can create the required magnetic fields, and TRASE Coils have successfully created images inside a conventional MRI machine with the gradient coil fields switched off. Sarty's team has also created a full-size mock-up of the compact MRI.

Several of the space conference attendees urged Sarty to develop the Earth applications first before pushing use of the compact MRI in space. But Sarty hopes the Canadian Space Agency can take enough interest to fully fund the concept for testing in a space environment.

"Eventually someone will break a bone in space," Sarty said. "We have no idea if that bone will heal."
