Mini has heightened the Anglophilia of its Rocketman concept ahead of the 2012 Olympic games, which take place in London this summer. The Rocketman concept is smaller than today?s Mini Cooper and first debuted at the 2011 Geneva auto show. Essentially, Mini?s changes to the Rocketman amount to a new paint job and an updated interior that contribute to the car?s strong Britannic theme.
The refreshed Rocketman?s body wears a coat of dark blue paint, and there are splashes of red around the edge of the roof, in the grille, and on the wheels. Mini painted the faces of the wheels a matte white color, and applied the same treatment to the door mirrors, the door handles, and the grille surround. The original Rocketman?s carbon-fiber accents?fender arches, front fender inserts, and roof pillars?carry over to the updated version.? And the new car wouldn?t scream ?God Save the Queen!? quite so loudly if it didn?t retain the concept?s glass roof which reveals the Union Jack?patterned roof structure. Inside, the same mix of rich materials found in the first Rocketman concept remain, but the colors have been swapped for red, white, and blue.
We rather dig this latest take on the Rocketman, but the car?s existence is somewhat puzzling. Recently, Mini chief Kay Segler told us the Rocketman likely wouldn?t ever go on sale. The main reason he cited, of course, was money?the Rocketman wouldn?t be much cheaper than a normal Mini Cooper, but it would be much smaller. With that in mind, it?s strange that Mini will be parading it about during the summer Olympics. We?re chalking up this new Rocketman?s existence to circumstance: Mini parent BMW is the automotive sponsor of the Olympics, so bringing a British-themed version of a popular Mini concept to show off seems a natural move.
