Home Maintenance Series ? Is Your House Sinking? Drought could ...

There has been a lot in the new lately about the ongoing drought and the impact it is having on the crops and livestock. Did you know it also has an affect on your home?? Lisa Kaplan Gordon is a HouseLogic contributor and builder of luxury homes in McLean, Va. She?s been a Homes editor for Gannett News Service and has reviewed home improvement products for AOL. Here is some great information from her about the impact the drought may be having on your home.
Prolonged drought pits house foundations against deep-rooted trees in a war for water.

You?re probably thinking, ?Hey, I?m supposed to keep water away from my foundation, so what gives? Why shouldn?t my trees soak up what water there is??

Yes, you want to keep water from pooling around your foundation ? that?s where your gutters, your downspouts, and properly graded soil comes in ? but moist soil actually helps keep homes from settling unevenly, which can lead to cracks in foundations, facades, and walls.

During dry spells, when mature trees and shrubs grab scant moisture, soils shrink and foundations may settle. This can be particularly problematic in areas like the Ohio Valley westward, where homes rest on on ?fat clay? ? soil that greatly expands and contracts depending on moisture.

If a foundation settles evenly, damage is nil or minimal. But typically moisture levels, sunlight, and landscaping differ on each side of a house, causing soil to dry out and the house to settle unevenly, called ?differential settlement.?

?That?s when you start to see cracks,? says Tom Scott, a structural engineer in Texas.

Signs your foundation is settling unevenly

  • Cracks in brick, drywall, tile, and stucco.

Floors slope gradually and are sometimes hard to notice. Use the marble test: Drop a few marbles on the floor and see where and how quickly they roll to the wall: The faster they roll, the greater the slope.

Settlement prevention

The best way to prevent your home from sinking during drought is to keep the soil around your home well hydrated.

  • Dig down about 6 inches; if the soil is bone dry, it needs water.
  • Run a soaker hose around the house about a foot away from the foundation, and let it water the soil until it?s moist ? not drenched. That should give nearby drought-stricken trees a drink and keep the soil from contracting.

If you can, a preventative strategy is to plant or transplant trees away from your foundation so roots won?t compete with your house for water during dry spells. Roots extend to edge of the tree?s leaf canopy; so if the branches touch the house, the tree?s too close.

Professional help

If you notice cracks, sloping floors, and sticky interior doors, you should call a professional.

  • A structural engineer will inspect your foundation and give you a report for $300-$800.
  • A single crack repair in a poured foundation will cost $400-800, depending on the damage.
  • Stabilizing and supporting a foundation with concrete or steel piers will cost $1,000-$3,000 each.

Parts of Arctic now 'like a giant slushie' (+video)

Sea ice in the Arctic has hit a record low, and scientists say that it could accelerate global warming.?

Long-term thinning of Arctic sea ice combined with an intense, windy storm over the Arctic in early August contributed to a new record low for sea-ice extent, scientists said Monday (Aug. 27).

Al Jazeera's Nick Clark joined an expedition travelling deep into the Arctic Circle to Qaanaaq, in Greenland.

"It used to be?the Arctic ice cover?was like a big block of ice," said Walt Meier, a research scientist with the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) during a press conference held after the new record low was set on Sunday (Aug. 26). "Now it's become crushed ice and that is a lot easier to melt and melt more quickly. Parts of the Arctic have become like a giant slushie. [That] makes them more vulnerable to these types of storms."

The storm persisted over the central Arctic Ocean for several days, bringing warm and very windy conditions to the Chukchi and East Siberian Seas, followed by low temperatures. Strong wind and wave action from storms like this can increase melt by breaking up ice, according to a NSIDC report following the storm.

On Sunday (Aug. 26), Arctic sea-ice extent fell to a new record: 1.58 million square miles (4.10 million square kilometers), surpassing the previous low, 1.61 square miles (4.17 square kilometers) set on Sept. 18, 2007, the NSIDC reported. [10 Things to Know About Sea Ice]

Sea-ice watchers?saw this coming, at least to some degree.

"As early as maybe July we were able to project that the 2012 ice cover will likely be similar to 2007, but then in August, when we have this storm, the values for 2012 started to go down lower," said Josefino Comiso, a sea ice researcher with NASA.

Sea-ice extent describes the area of ocean?covered at least 15 percent by sea ice?as measured by satellite instruments. Continuous satellite measurements of sea-ice extent date back to the late 1970s.

Sea-ice extent grows and retreats with the season every year. While there are significant fluctuations in this cycle from year to year, by the late 1990s satellite measurements indicated there was a strong downward trend in sea-ice extent, said Claire Parkinson a climatologist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

By the end of the 1990s, submarine data showed the ice was thinning as well, Parkinson said.

The old ice, which survives year after year and maintains thicknesses of 10 to 12 feet (3 to 3.6 meters), has been disappearing from the Arctic waters, Meier said. Now, Arctic sea ice has become thinner and is more easily melted or pushed around by storms, he said. "The Arctic Ocean is really a different place than it used to be," he said.

The loss of Arctic sea ice has serious implications for the animals ??polar bears?and walruses ? that use it as habitat.

How make the internal Intrapreneurship from myth into - Morally Right

Post link:??http://www.essay-words.com/how-make-the-internal-intrapreneurship-from-myth-into-reality.html

Lots of company publications purport to teach best administration how you can develop a tradition which nurtures visionaries such as Sergey Brin, Mark Zuckerberg, and Steve Jobs. The ?Large Thought? post set to be released in September?s Harvard Company Evaluation heralds the dawning of a new age of innovation marked through personal ?catalysts? which leverage the resources and achieve of a large enterprise without losing the nimble agility of the startup.
It can no surprise that Lot of money ONE HUNDRED leaders are searching for a game-changing idea to provide wish in the face of ever-escalating competitors through abroad rivals and the speed of technical modify. Along with wave after wave of entrepreneurial ventures effectively difficult corporate titans with regard to marketplace dominance, the establishment is right to become scared. Any of the amount of unsuccessful acquisitions of scrappy competitors displays which buying the innovative engine provides its very own difficulties. Furthermore, to attract probably the most talented young people getting into the workforce, large business needs in order to compete with the dream of getting the following Work or Zuckerberg.
?Just about every leader recognizes that this speed of change in marketplaces implies that company as usual is not enough. A possibility sufficient to be a excellent operator, you need to be revolutionary, you need to believe in a different way, you need to provide birth to new businesses, ? states Scott Anthony, managing director with regard to development boutique Innosight, and writer of the forthcoming Harvard Company Evaluation article, ?The brand new Business Garage.?
However is not this the contradiction in terms to get an entrepreneur inside a big company? Are those who else claim to become instilling entrepreneurialism simply motivating garden-variety creative thinking or even just the killer product sales mentality? (Not really that there?s anything at all wrong with that.) Even the president of Babson University, house from the Arthur M. Blank Middle with regard to Entrepreneurship, acknowledges that much from the rhetoric about so-called intrapreneurs guarantees a lot more than it provides.
?Some CEOs move so far as to say, ?We would like all of our 300, 000 workers to become business owners.? It is just total nonsense, ? states Len Schlesinger, Babson?s president and writer of Simply Begin. ?The reality is that you?re requesting individuals to show a set of behaviors within an atmosphere which, through the really character, tends to be very hostile to people actions.?
Cultivating a good entrepreneurial tradition is nearly because difficult ? as well as uncommon ? as launching an effective startup organization, nearly all that will not notice their own 4th birthday. You may not just wall off the innovators, as in Lockheed Martin?s legendary ?Skunk Works, ? simply because by safeguarding all of them through becoming corrupted through the operational, bureaucratic tradition, additionally you prevent all of them through the large-company sources that could give them an advantage more than nimble independents. Nor are you able to reasonably anticipate that every worker is going to be continuously within the hunt for the following big thing ? the majority will have to concentrate on program creation.
?The actual extremes tend to be harmful, ? Anthony states. ?You need to strike an extremely cautious medium where you discover methods to really selectively and thoughtfully borrow the true abilities which will provide you with benefits ? without having corrupting possibly side.?
In many corporations, workers play it safe simply because they understand just one failing may finish a career. Not so, apparently, at schooling giant Pearson , where CEO Marjorie Scardino urges workers ?to become brave, imaginative and good.? In 2008, then-senior vice president Patrick Supanc discovered themself stressing out loud to Scardino because they waited with each other at an airport terminal which Pearson was not relocating rapidly sufficient to exploit some new possibilities within educational technologies. 3 months later on, Scardino requested him to get ready a pitch on the unknown territory he would prefer to chart. The organization accepted seeds funding and THE YEAR 2010 Pearson released Alleyoop, a good academic software program organization which prepares teenagers with regard to university in partnership with a variety of content material companies
Alleyoop is surely an self-employed division of Pearson, along with Supanc because president, reporting to some panel comprised of best Pearson executives. ?It was a dangerous maneuver, ? he states. ?In case companies wish to foster entrepreneurship, they will really need to commit to the actual autonomy and also the time and the actual willingness to support people because they move through a series of failures.?

Evaluate children's stress after natural disasters

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? As Hurricane Isaac nears the Gulf Coast, one may wonder what the impact of natural disasters are on children. Who is most at risk for persistent stress reactions? How can such youth be identified and assisted in the aftermath of a destructive storm?

Dr. Annette M. La Greca, a professor of psychology and pediatrics at the University of Miami, and her colleagues, have been studying children's disaster reactions following Hurricanes Andrew (1992), Charley (2004) and Ike (2008). Recent findings from Hurricane Ike shed light on these questions about children's functioning.

The new findings suggest that it is important to evaluate children's symptoms of post-traumatic stress and depression, in order to identify those who may be the most adversely affected. Findings also suggest that helping children cope with stressors that occur during or after the disaster may improve children's psychological functioning. "Children may have to move or change schools. Their neighborhood may not be safe for outdoor play and they may not be able to spend time with their friends. Children need help coping with these and other post-disaster stressors," La Greca says.

In collaboration with Scott and Elaine Sevin, Dr. La Greca developed a workbook for parents to help their children cope with the many stressors that occur after disasters. The book gives parents tips for helping children stay healthy and fit, maintain normal routines, and cope with stressors and with emotions, such as fears and worries. The After the Storm workbook is available at no cost at www.7-dippity.com.

A paper to be published in the Journal of Affective Disorders indicates that, eight months after the disaster, children with signs of both post-traumatic stress and depression represent a high-risk group for longer-term adverse reactions. Such children are less likely to recover by 15 months post-disaster than other youth. They also report more severe levels of psychological symptoms and experience more post-disaster stressors than other youth. The authors on this paper are Drs. Betty Lai and Annette La Greca from the University of Miami, Dr. Beth Auslander from the University of Texas Medical Branch, and Dr. Mary Short from the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

'Runway's' real model: Show was 'adult bullying'

Lifetime

Terri Herlihy and Ven Budhu during judging on "Project Runway."

By Anna Chan, TODAY

Terri Herlihy is still hurting from her experience on the "Fix My Friend" episode of "Project Runway" that aired Aug. 23. During the episode, which featured real women who had been nominated by their friends to appear on the show for a makeover, viewers saw?Herlihy repeatedly insulted by designer Ven Budhu and brought to tears.

He insinuated she was fat numerous times, telling her that all of the belts were too small for her, said that she had no sense of style, no shape, that her before photo was "a nightmare." He mentioned several times that she was 40 and a size 14.?

In reality, Herlihy told The Clicker, she was a size 10 during filming, and had turned 36 just two days before. And her experience on the show was worse than what Lifetime aired, she said.

Herlihy told us that during filming, she was "bullied" into wearing no shoes or accessories. In fact, Herlihy said, she and her friend Theo Thomas (the pal who brought her on the show) had to go rummaging in "Runway's" accessories bins themselves because Budhu, who was supposed to figure out her look from head-to-toe as part of the challenge, was going to send her down the runway for judging without any accessories. "My friend found the shoes. My friend found the belt. My friend did it all," she said. "She laid into him, but they didn't show that."

"I think (the producers) did a great job of editing it because it was so much worse than what was shown," Herlihy told us. "They edited it to my advantage because I would've kept looking stupider on TV."

Herlihy said that even though the episode was edited to her advantage, it was still tough to watch.

"I was horrified watching the show with my three daughters," she said. "I let him bully me, but I didn't know what he was saying behind the scenes when I wasn't around, in the confessional. It was hard to explain to my kids, 'Yeah, he was mean, but it didn't bother Mommy,' even though it did. I have to let them know something. It's how you teach your kids not?to do?this."

She also said that she didn't react on the show because she wanted to teach her children not to be prejudiced or be bullies.?Had she known just how bad it got behind her back, though, Herlihy said she wouldn't have let her daughters -- ages 14, 11 and 8 -- watch the show.

But?the controversy?didn't end with the taping. As the episode aired Thursday, Budhu continued to hurl insults at Herlihy via Twitter, saying?she had no personality and blaming editing for making him look like the bad guy. He has since deleted the tweets and offered up an apology. "I feel awful and I sincerely apologize to my client and viewers as (my)?remarks were unintentional," he wrote.

Herlihy said she was disappointed that Budhu wasn't eliminated for his behavior and after essentially failing the challenge to create makeover-worthy fashions for a real-world client.

"If he would've gone home, that would've been a different story," Herlihy said. "But because they kept him, that's why I feel like (it's) not only putting me down, but putting down every person who isn't a size 6 or below. How many people has he hurt or affected in some way from all his comments?"

Sean Herlihy / Courtesy of Terri Herlihy

Terri Herlihy and her husband, Sean.

"So it looks like?(the show's producers are)?all for it ... because it was adult bullying at its best about my weight," she added. "I can't imagine all the girls, women, teenagers watching that show who are bigger than me and what they think."

Herlihy and a friend have since launched a Facebook page called Terri's Redemption to draw attention to the bullying she experienced and to try to prevent other women from feeling discriminated against because of their clothing size.

Lifetime has not yet replied to requests for comment.

Herlihy and her friend Theo weren't the only ones who were appalled by Budhu's behavior. The 36-year-old said that designer Gunnar Deatherage, who treated his own model like a prized client, saw how upset she was and tried to make her "Runway" experience a bit better.

"Gunnar actually stuck up for me, and he spoke to hair and makeup that day and explained to them what was going on," Herlihy revealed. Part of the challenge includes the designers telling the hair and makeup folks how they'd like their models to look. "(I understand that)?they didn't really take Ven's directions of what he wanted my hair and makeup to be. So I'm very thankful for Gunnar. And that wasn't aired on the show, and I wish it was."?

Deatherage wasn't the only one who wanted to make things right. Michael Costello, who finished fourth in season eight and third in "Project Runway: All Stars," took to Twitter Thursday night and offered to make Herlihy a dress.

"I just wanted to do something for her that makes her happy, something that she can enjoy," Costello told us. The designer himself was bullied by a fellow contestant during his first run on the show.

Like Herlihy, he thought Budhu should've been auf'ed. "It would've been right if they would've eliminated him," Costello said. "Nathan's dress wasn't actually that bad compared to what Ven did. (Nathan) achieved the challenge. His client was happy."

But auf'ed or not, the "Runway" alum thinks Budhu's career might not be able to recover.

"I think he literally destroyed his fashion career with this episode," Costello said. "I don't think any woman would want to wear anything from him ever again after seeing the way Terri was treated. ... It's sad because he's a great talent, he's very skilled."

Costello also said he wondered if there was something more the show could've done. "I think a PSA message would've been very powerful at that point," he said. "But also doing something about empowering women and making women feel good, because that's what the episode was about."

Do you think there was more the show could have done to address Ven's treatment of Terri? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Is Personal Bankruptcy The Right Choice For Me?

Fukitol -- When Life Just Blows ....item 1)..non-dischargeable in bankruptcy "due diligence" (August 12, 2011) ... by marsmet521Find out more about Chapter 13. Chapter 13 bankruptcy is a good choice for people whose unsecured debts amount to lower than $250,000 and who receive a regular income. This type of bankruptcy protects your assets from seizure and lets you repay your credits over the course of a few years. This repayment period usually lasts from three to five years. If you make your payments faithfully during that time, any remaining unsecured debt will be eliminated. Remember that you must make every payment. Missing even one could cause the court to dismiss your case.

Bankruptcy Attorney Fee and What Can Be Done About It?

The bankruptcy attorney fee varies depending on the unique circumstances of the specific case. Several other factors could influence this amount. Other questions may arise. Such as, what is the service available in return for the fees, or how to pay the fee when one is bankrupt, or even, is the insolvency lawyer at all required? As a rule of thumb, for normal cases, the fee of an insolvency advocate is in the region of $1000 to $2000. However, this figure could vary both on the plus and minus side depending on the specific case. Although the figures look formidable, in reality, it is a worthwhile investment and a necessary one. Most people fall in the normal cases. To the individual struggling with the multiple debtors, credit cards, and other mortgage arrears, the case may look to be a very complicated one. However, to an insolvency lawyer, this is just another regular case. The fee is also dependent on the locality. If one chooses a counselor from the expensive and posh locality of the city, the charges are going to work out on the higher side. To keep the advocate fees down, one might have to do a thorough research and look for someone from outside the area. Apart from attorney fees for bankruptcy, there may be sundry expenses depending on the type of defalcation case that is filed. These sundry expenses may differ, for example, when filing a chapter 11 or a chapter 13 defalcation. Therefore, it is necessary to get an idea of what the sundry expenses could be in your specific case. Your insolvency lawyer will be the best to guide in this subject. To any debtor, faced with defalcation, the topmost question that has to be answered is whether an insolvency lawyer is required. One major reason why a counselor is needed is for paperwork that is required to be handled. This has to be completed accurately and correctly, which might prove to be quite daunting to a lay individual. Another reason why an insolvency lawyer is required is to interpret the legal language. If the legal language is misinterpreted, small mistakes could be committed. These may go against you later. For example, you might be trying to pay off your relatives first, while ignoring others. Even if your intentions were honorable, in the eyes of the debit and credit law, this is fraudulent, and considered as showing preference to some creditors over others. A destitution judge will certainly look upon this badly. A bankruptcy attorney will be able to advice as to which of your actions may be considered against the laws. The process of filing for destitution is a very stressful experience. A lot of advice will be coming from relatives, and acquaintances. Sifting through all the advice and selecting the most optimum can become an impossible task. What is required is the professional advice that can be put to good use. All this indicates a fee is a necessity. However, another vital question that may arise now is how to pay the fees for the liquidation attorney when you have no money as you are considering destitution. This is something that bankruptcy attorneys keep coming up against in their professional career, so they are well experienced in helping to raise the money for both, the advocate fees as well as the court filing fees. Most bankruptcy attorneys offer free consultation, and this can be used to advantage before taking a final decision. Discuss all the debts that you owe when you call for the consultation. Unless the situation is declared completely, the counselor will not be able to help fully. The Bankruptcy Attorney will definitely help those people if they have filed for bankruptcy so that, the common people do not get over burdened with the debt which will be impossible for them to pay back. Finding A Good Lawyer To Help You With Your Bankruptcy Claim

You may have heard bankruptcy referred to differently, either as Chapter 7 or Chapter 13. Learn the differences between the two before filing. In Chapter 7 most of your outstanding accounts will essentially be erased. Any ties you have concerning creditors will definitely be dissolved. A Chapter 13 filing involves a repayment plan, though. Typically, you will make a partial payment against your debts over the next 60 months before the balance of the debts is lifted. Take the time to learn more about these different options so you can make the best decision possible.

Consumers may get new federal regulations to avoid foreclosure

Mortgage servicing has become a profitable business due, in part, to the fees mortgage servicers are allowed to charge borrowers who are late in their mortgage payments. According to the CFPB, some mortgage servicers have charged excessive fees and required mortgage borrowers to pay high premiums for homeowner?s insurance if the borrower did not maintain insurance coverage. The new regulations will not be finalized in 2013. A homeowner who experiences a loss or reduction in income that makes it difficult to make monthly mortgage payments can consult with a bankruptcy attorney to find out what options are available. Modification of the terms of a mortgage loan to make the mortgage payments affordable is an option, but only if the mortgage servicer or mortgage lender agrees to change the terms of the loan. Filing for bankruptcy is a way to avoid a home foreclosure. An automatic stay issued by the bankruptcy court can stop foreclosure, repossession, wage garnishment and creditor harassment. Modification of the mortgage terms can continue to be pursued during the automatic stay. Source: The Associated Press, ?Consumer finance agency sets mortgage protections,? Daniel Wagner, Aug. 9, 2012

Google Responds To Apple's Patent Victory - Business Insider

Google

Android boss, Andy Rubin

Apple pretty much mopped the floor with Samsung in their patent lawsuit.

Since Apple was really suing Samsung over its Android phones, a lot of people are wondering if this means Google's Android is in trouble.

Google says these patents "don't relate to the core Android operating system."

Here's Google's full statement, given to The Verge:

The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don't relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the US Patent Office. The mobile industry is moving fast and all players ? including newcomers ? are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don't want anything to limit that.

Who am I? (The Most Important Question) - Maria Erving :: Maria ...

Not ?who do I want to be?, or become. (Or ?create?).

That?s a question to ask (who do I want to become) if you?re into personal development and self improvement but when it comes to spiritual awakening and enlightenment that question has no meaning at all, so that?s not what I?m addressing in this article.

I?m inviting you to ask yourself the question ?who am I??, who are you without the thought about yourself, without any concepts and beliefs you carry about yourself?

Without the idea of being someone. Who are you, really?

The real you is beyond all self-definitions, whether you perceive yourself to be a good or bad person, a happy person, a victimized person, a wonderful person, great, defeated, selfish, smart, not so smart person, or whatever self-definitions you have about yourself.

The real you is not the person you have been taught to believe you are, nor are you the person you imagine yourself to be.

All concepts and identifications of who we think we are come and go, only that which we really are remains untouched and unchanged, and can?t be described or put into any box or given labels of ?I am this and I am that?.

There?s no need to polish, improve and make your little self better.

The real you can never be found or created by mind. It?s like trying to polish your shadow to make it look better. There?s nothing wrong with the shadow; it?s just not who you are.

Who is it that is aware of all the concepts, ideas and thoughts..?

Here?s a post that came to mind with a pic that I think you?ll find kind of funny :-)

http://mariaerving.com/the-angel-and-devil-on-your-shoulders/

What remains when you let go of all concepts and beliefs, all wishes of becoming somebody, and instead just be in the pure nakedness of awareness, ..who and what is that which remains when all beliefs are put away?

For a moment, let go of the person with all it?s stories.

Let go of the need to change the stories into something better, and let go of the wish to make a better story for the future.

No need to try to fix any stories about ourselves, just let go right now, let go of the ?story of me?, without making it good or bad, just look beyond it.

Who are you without your story?

An old post came to mind, one that I wrote back in the days when I was all about self improvement and re-program your mind concepts.

Thought it would be fun to share with you :-) I obviously don?t resonate with any of the mind-programming/affirmation-stuff anymore. (I?m not interested in personal development anymore).

Anyway, here it is:

http://mariaerving.com/telling-a-new-story/

Spiritual awakening is not some kind of self improvement plan where you follow specific steps to reach enlightenment, and we can never predict any of it, nor create any of it, so it doesn?t matter what we do with our stories, they are all in the mind, and our true nature is beyond mind.

Spiritual awakening just happens.

When we begin to look into the deep realms of reality and not the shallow level, fear will come up.

Even feelings of terror might come up.

The ego will not approve of you?re asking about true reality, and it will defend it?s views and beliefs, it will throw fits, it will reject, it will grasp for experiences that feels good, it will protect itself in any way it can, and if it can?t make you stop looking and asking about true existence (really deep existential questions such as ?who am I? scares the shit out of the ego because when you discover who you are it will mean the death of the ego) it will absolutely try get to you by hooking you on your deepest fears.

Spiritual crisis might happen.

Look anyway.

There might be some fierce resistance! And most probably so, and this is where most people begins to avoid, they try to fix, make better, they try to let go, or keep old stories that feels familiar (ego take on old identification that feels familiar) and do literally everything it can to prevent you from realizing the true nature of your own being.

Look anyway!

The ego will: fight it ? grasp for something better ? or avoid.

The spirit will: embrace ? face it fully, whatever comes up.

Spiritual awakening is not about creating a better self, becoming somebody or anything like that.

It?s about letting go of the false self (the person you think you are) and the growth is about discovery and realization, being-ness, not becoming-ness.

There will come times when you fall back into ego in the process, and it?s completely ?normal?, but you just keep looking anyway, deeper and deeper.

Inquiring within by asking ?Who am I, really??, will reveal the true nature of your being, and it will reveal the ego too, and by knowing who you are not, you will find youself.

Not by avoiding the process because it can be very uncomfortable at times, but with awareness and openness to look deeply, to really wanting the truth more than only feeling better.

?

An interesting side-note; did you know that the word ?ego? is a Latin word and means ?I?..?

How To Handle Pests At Home | Home Improvement Information

Pests can be exasperating and devastating when they?re present at your house. Though you want to avoid hiring a pest control and management pros to do the job for you, there are occasions when you?ve got to spend some cash on their services. If the problem is enormous on magnitude, you need a professional service to get rid of pests. In case the issue can be resolved by you alone, then you only need some important tools to use.

There are some fundamental principles to adhere to when your objective is to reduce and/or eliminate pest populations at home. Below are the things that you can do to keep these vexing pests at bay:

1. Seal all crevices and gaps ? Insects and other pests go through houses beneath doors, around windows, around pipes, vents, cracks, louvres and eaves. You have to use caulking and weatherstripping to seal off these areas so bugs can get in. Sound right? It?s extremely simple. Ask this question: ?If I was a bug, how could I am getting into this house?? It isn?t difficult.

2. No outside lights ? It's true. Bugs are attracted to lights. If you leave the porch light on, your are going to draw in bugs. And, if there?s a gap beneath the doorway (see 1.) they're going to find it. So , the less lights to draw in bugs, the better. You act as the judge.

3. Eliminate food sources ? Garbage containers draws roaches, ants, rats and other pests. Keep closed with close fitting lids. Clean up spilled rubbish. And, I really do not like to mention this one, but??bird feeders are bug and rodent magnates. The farther away from the house, the better. Sorry. Here again, you be the judge.

4. No Ivy ? Ivy is a bug factory. No other way to assert it. Roaches, rats, mice, snakes, ants, spiders, and all sorts of other animals find safe haven and great breeding areas within the loads of Ivy growing around and up on the sides of houses. Ivy is truly pretty isn?t it? At least I suspect so. But it makes pest control and pest management nearly impossible.

5. Maintain tidy gutters ? No only do stopped-up gutters prevent the flow of water, but they provide a paradise for bug breeding. Mosquitoes and roaches will thrive and breed in stopped up gutters. Plus, the build up of debris will cause the gutters to pull loose from the house. So?.do yourself and your place a favour. Keep the gutters well maintained and clog-free.

As a rule, look for a professional pest control and management service if you can't manage these pests at home on your own.

Astrocytes control the generation of new neurons from neural stem cells

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Researchers from the Laboratory of astrocyte biology and CNS regeneration headed by Prof. Milos Pekny just published a research article in a journal Stem Cells on the molecular mechanism that controls generation of new neurons in the brain.

Astrocytes are cells that have many functions in the central nervous system, such as the control of neuronal synapses, blood flow, or the brain's response to neurotrauma or stroke.

Reduces brain tissue damage

Prof. Pekny's laboratory together with collaborators have earlier demonstrated that astrocytes reduce the brain tissue damage after stroke and that the integration of transplanted neural stem cells can be largely improved by modulating the activity of astrocytes.

Generation of new neurons

In their current study, the Sahlgrenska Academy researchers show how astrocytes control the generation of new neurons in the brain. An important contribution to this project came from ?bo Academy, one of Sahlgrenska's traditional collaborative partners.

"In the brain, astrocytes control how many new neurons are formed from neural stem cells and survive to integrate into the existing neuronal networks. Astrocytes do this by secreting specific molecules but also by much less understood direct cell-cell interactions with stem cells," says Prof. Milos Pekny.

Important regulator

"Astrocytes are in physical contact with neural stem cells and we have shown that they signal through the Notch pathway to stem cells to keep the birth rate of new neurons low. We have also shown that the intermediate filament system of astrocytes is an important regulator of this process. It seems that astrocyte intermediate filaments can be used as a target to increase the birthrate of new neurons."

Target for future therapies

"We are starting to understand some of the cellular and molecular mechanisms behind the control of neurogenesis. Neurogenesis is one of the components of brain plasticity, which plays a role in the learning process as well as in the recovery after brain injury or stroke. This work helps us to understand how plasticity and regenerative response can be therapeutically promoted in the future," says Prof. Milos Pekny.

Amazon begins collecting sales tax in Texas ? Business ...

Mom-and-pop stores may reclaim some business in the wake of a major announcement involving one of the country?s largest online retailers.

Alert: In a move that could lead to significant tax repercussions, Amazon.com began collecting tax on its online sales in Texas on July 1. This prompted an ?it?s about time? reaction from state retailers who believe the online giant has enjoyed an unfair advantage for too long.

Amazon now collects sales tax also in Kansas, Ken?tucky, North Dakota, New York and Wash?ing?ton. Amazon?s agreement with Texas Comptroller Susan Combs to start collecting the 6.25% sales tax follows similar agreements reached in seven other states, Amazon says. Pennsylvania and California will follow in September (see chart below).

?We are thrilled that Amazon will finally have to start collecting,? Valerie Koehler told the Houston Chronicle. ?It?s always boggled my mind that they didn?t,? said the owner of Houston?s Blue Willow Bookshop. Amazon sells more than books. Expensive items like electronics have meant ?a pretty substantial loss of income for the state,? she said.

In fact, Combs said in April that the state loses an estimated $600 million annually in potential revenue from Internet sales from all sources, not just Amazon. The agreement also calls for Amazon to create at least 2,500 jobs in Texas over the next four years and to make $200 million in capital improvements.

For years, the Seattle-based company has avoided paying sales tax through lawsuits or by closing local business operations. In fact, it closed its distribution center at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in the fall after the company received a $269 million bill covering uncollected sales tax from 2005 to 2009, Reuters reported.

Many would like to see Internet retailers like Amazon collect sales tax in every state, and the pressure on Amazon has increased. The Seattle Times reported that Amazon, under attack in states with huge budget shortfalls, reversed its position and started making deals.

Now, some observers say, Amazon can lower its shipping costs by opening distribution centers throughout the United States.

?Once they?re freed up to do business in more states, their ability to get you things cheaply and quickly will all get better,? said analyst Bryan Gildenberg, of Boston-based Kantar Retail, in The Seattle Times. He suggested this could hurt the traditional retailers. ?When they?re able to put distribution centers wherever ... that has the potential to be a game changer,? he said.

While retailers are cheering the state agreements as ones that will level the playing field, Gildenberg doesn?t foresee Amazon suffering much from the new tax obligations.

?All retailers have shoppers who are acutely price sensitive,? he said. ?They call them cherry pickers and try to get rid of them. The shoppers most responsive to the changes in sales tax are probably among Amazon?s least profitable shoppers anyway.?

Tip: We will continue to monitor developments in this area.

Birthplace of most European and West Asian languages traced to Turkey

Using methods borrowed from epidemiology, researchers have identified Anatolia, a peninsula that is now part of Turkey, as the origin of the major language families of Europe and West Asia.

By Wynne Parry,?LiveScience Senior Writer / August 24, 2012

Indo-European languages ??a category that includes most of the major languages of Europe and western Asia ? originated in what is now Turkey, between 8,000 and 9,500 years ago, say researchers.

English is one member of a large family, the Indo-European languages, that are now spoken by a huge swath of the world. But where they originated is the subject of controversy, with experts undecided between two areas of western Asia.

Borrowing a technique used to reconstruct family trees for viruses, an international research team has come down squarely on one side of the debate: Indo-European languages originated in Anatolia, a southwestern Asian peninsula that is now part of Turkey, between 8,000 and 9,500 years ago, and were carried, at least in part, by the spread of agriculture.

Other researchers maintain that Indo-European languages originated in the steppes north of the Caspian and Black seas 6,000 years ago and were spread by the semi-nomadic Kurgan people.

"These two theories have two different ages and homelands, and by tracing back in time using these methods to study viral outbreaks, we are able to test between the theories," Quentin Atkinson of the University of Auckland in New Zealand said in an audio interview released by the journal Science, in which the new research appears.

Instead of constructing a family tree by comparing the DNA of viruses, Atkinson and colleagues compared what are known as cognates, or words in different languages with the same origin. For instance, the English "mother" and the Spanish "madre" are cognates. [Original Language Sounded Like Yoda]

The researchers included about 20 extinct languages in their sample of 100 Indo-European languages; some of these extinct languages, such as Hittite, were spoken more than 3,000 years ago. These ancient languages helped the team look further back in time.

They looked to historical events, such as the breakup of the Roman Empire's language Latin into the Romance languages, to establish a time scale for the evolution of the Indo-European languages.?

They then used a statistical method to focus in on the family trees that best explained their data. The result strongly favors the Anatolian hypothesis, Atkinson said.

The spread of agriculture, either as new generations of farmers sought out new land or through the conversion of hunter-gatherers, was a mechanism that would explain the expansive spread of the languages in this family, according to the researchers, but they added that agriculture was probably not the sole driver of language spread. ?

The research is detailed in Friday's (Aug. 24) issue of the journal Science.

Romney to feature personal side at convention

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Mitt Romney is about to get personal.

The GOP's presidential nominee-to-be wants to use his four-day party next week in Florida to play up his life story following a summer filled with a barrage of TV ads ? courtesy of President Barack Obama and his allies ? that cast him as a ruthless and out-of-touch businessman.

He'll surround himself with his five sons, five daughters-in-law and 15 of his 18 grandchildren. Romney's wife, Ann, will play her biggest role yet. A parade of athletes Romney met as an Olympic organizer, such as hockey legend Mike Eruzione, will be on hand. So will doting parishioners he helped as a lay pastor in the Mormon Church in Boston.

From the stagecraft to the speakers' roster, the agenda for the convention that starts Monday is carefully crafted toward one goal: introducing Romney to the country on his own terms while projecting him as the leader the country needs in tough economic times ? and Obama as a failure on that front.

"We go to a convention and for the first time define Mitt a little bit better," said Ron Kaufman, a top Romney adviser.

Aides dismiss the notion that the former Massachusetts governor needs to repair a damaged image after a summer of negative ads and a recent string of missteps, including Friday when he waded into a debunked conspiracy theory by raising the issue of Obama's citizenship.

"No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate," Romney joked at a rally in the suburbs of Detroit while visiting his native state. "They know that this is the place that we were born and raised."

Just a day earlier, Romney caused himself another potential headache when he said big business was "doing fine" due to off-shore tax havens. It was a comment that echoed a claim similar to one he had criticized Obama for making, and it also reminded voters of Romney's own overseas accounts.

In the coming days, Romney's team will put the finishing touches on a program that ? whether acknowledged by the campaign or not ? is intended to turn the page from a difficult summer. Among his hiccups: a foreign trip marred by self-inflicted troubles.

The convention will be Romney's most consequential shot yet to send a precise message to Americans: that he has the experience and resolve to strengthen economy and the nation.

But Romney's challenge is that most people have an opinion about him. Just 8 percent of people in a new Associated Press-GfK poll say they don't know how they feel about him.

Romney's team appears undaunted.

"We look to tell all parts of the governor's story," said Russ Schriefer, a top Romney adviser who has overseen the details of the convention. "We can show that Gov. Romney is uniquely qualified to take on the problems that this country's facing."

The first three nights of the convention will be aimed at building the case against Obama ? specifically on his stewardship on the economy ? with speeches and videos featuring everyday Americans. Expect tough critiques from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday and vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan on Wednesday.

As Schriefer put it, the plan is to "lay down the predicate and make the case why President Obama has failed."

Come Thursday, Romney himself will take the elaborate stage ? a Frank Lloyd Wright-styled set that Romney himself helped design ? with a speech intended to show voters that he's serious and thoughtful. He will defend his business experience, discuss his time as a church pastor, and highlight his record at the 2002 winter Olympics.

He's spent the past year testing and sharpening the stories he will tell in front of smaller crowds, beginning in the primary campaign more than a year ago.

Before he takes the stage, beneficiaries of the counseling Romney did as a lay pastor in the church will give testimonials about him.

In the run-up to the convention, Romney has started telling his story in earnest.

He wrote an op-ed piece for the Wall Street Journal this week explaining what he had learned as president and CEO of Bain Capital, a private equity firm he founded in Boston. The firm's dealings, including closed plants in key states, have provided fodder for Obama and Democrats.

Romney used the column to highlight the company's biggest successes. "A good idea is not enough for a business to succeed," he wrote. "It requires a talented team, a good business plan and capital to execute it."

The Romneys ? married more than 40 years ? also are featured in Sunday's issue of Parade magazine. And they sat together for an interview for Fox News Sunday during which Mrs. Romney makes pancakes. They were taping another interview Friday in the Detroit-area movie theater where they had their first date.

While Mrs. Romney was taking on a large role in the convention, it was unclear whether her speech would be covered by broadcast television networks. They are not planning to cover Monday night when she's scheduled to take the podium.

Stability Science: How Tails Help a Kite Fly

TAILS YOU WIN: Ever wondered why kites have tails? Find out in this high-flying activity. Image: George Retseck

Key concepts
Aerodynamics

Forces

Introduction
Have you ever tried to build your own kite? Kites have been a source of entertainment through the centuries for kids worldwide. And they've been used for scientific experiments, too?Benjamin Franklin flew one to investigate lightning. (Something you shouldn't do!) In this activity you will have a chance to build your very own kite?a simple sled kite?and use it to investigate how tails help kites fly. After trying out this activity you may add tails to other kites to help them soar to greater heights!

Background
Did you know that, besides Ben Franklin, one of the most famous kite flyers of all time was a 10-year-old boy? His name was Homan Walsh, and without him the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge may not have been built in 1847. Before construction could begin, someone needed to get a line across the Niagara River Gorge. Homan successfully flew a kite from one side of the gorge to the other over the treacherous rapids below and, after securing his kite string, heavier line was fed across until a steel cable could connect both shores and bridge construction could begin. Homan was rewarded with a $10 cash prize, which was a lot of money in 1847!

How does a kite fly? As someone runs with a kite, the wind going head-on into the kite causes a lift force on it. This force is perpendicular to the wind, pushing the kite up. At the same time, the force of drag pulls the kite back, in the direction that the wind is going.

There are many different kite designs. Some are very old, like traditional Chinese and Japanese kites. Some designs are very new, like the dynamic stunt kites used in sport-kite flying competitions. Their modern materials and designs make them ultra-maneuverable.

??? ? Carefully cut out the sled kite. You can decorate it using crayons, markers or other media.
??? ? Trim the length of the two drinking straws so they will fit in the area marked for the straws. Tape the straws in place.
??? ? Place three pieces of tape in the marked areas covering the black circles to reinforce the holes for the kite string. Using a hole punch, carefully punch the two holes marked by the black circles.
??? ? Cut two pieces of kite string to make each 45 centimeters (cm) long. Tie a string through each hole. Tie them tight, but not so much that you tear the paper. Tie the opposite end of both strings together to one end of a paper clip.
??? ? Cut a one-meter-long piece of kite string. Tie one end of this string to the other end of the paper clip. Your sled kite is ready to fly!
??? ? To make some tails to test on your kite, take a plastic grocery bag or other thin plastic bag and lay it completely flat. If the bag has handles, cut with scissors straight across to remove the handles. Then keep cutting the bag in this way to create thin rings (which will look like strips when flat)?each should be about three-cm wide. Cut up the whole bag into these rings. Discard the handles. You can see this in an online visual guide for this step.)

Procedure
??? ? Try to fly your kite without a tail in an open, clear area outside. First walk with it, then try running with it. What does the kite do when you walk and then when you run? How well does it fly?
??? ? Using the plastic grocery bag rings you made, tape a tail to the bottom of your kite that is 10 cm long. (This will probably be less than one grocery bag ring.) The tail should be centered. Try to fly your kite outside again, first walking and then running with it. How does the kite fly compared with when it had no tail? Why do you think this is?
??? ? You'll now test a tail that is 100 cm long. To make this tail, loop two rings together and gently pull them tight (you can see this step?which involves overlapping and twisting the loops once?in the visual guide). Attach more rings to the tail this way to make it longer. Attach the longer tail to the 10-cm tail on the kite to give the kite that is 100 cm long. Try to fly your kite outside again, first walking and then running with it. How well does the kite fly with the 100-cm tail compared with the 10-cm one? How does it compare with flying a kite without a tail? Why do you think this is?
??? ? You'll now test a tail that is 500 cm long. Use the same looping process to expand your 100-cm tail another 400 cm in length. Try to fly your kite outside again, first walking and then running with it. How well does the kite fly with the 500-cm tail compared with the other tails or no tail? What differences do you notice? Why do you think this is?
??? ? Out of the tails you tested, which tail do you think helped the kite fly the best?? Why do you think this is?
??? ? Extra: Do this activity again, but instead of comparing different tail lengths, try adding additional tails and comparing the results. Add them symmetrically to the back end of the kite. How well does the kite fly with no tail, one tail, two tails?
??? ? Extra: In this activity you flew a kite using kite string one meter long. What happens when you fly the kite using different lengths of kite string, such as one meter, three meters or five meters?
??? ? Extra: There are a lot of other kite designs. Use the Internet, books or magazines at a library to find plans for different kinds of kites. Then test your new kite designs as you did in this activity. How does the tail length affect how well other kite designs work? What other variables affect how well kite designs work?
