Chile's president launches new base in Antarctica

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera is in Antarctica, where he planted his country's flag and unveiled a plaque at the site of another research station.

Once constructed, the base will be run by Chile's air force. The Chilean army and navy also have bases on the icy continent, where the South American nation's Antarctic claims overlap with Argentina and Britain.

Wednesday's visit was Pinera's third trip to Antarctica. He traveled there before with President Rafael Correa of Ecuador and also with President Jose Mujica of Uruguay. This time Pinera took along his ministers of defense and foreign affairs, along with his military chiefs.
