?Parks in the City of?Courtenay?
for Sports and Events?

There are many parks within the City of Courtenay?but Lewis Park and Simms Park are the main downtown parks?where events such as the?July 1st. celebration's and the?Comox Valley Highland Games are held. ? Lewis Park is the main park for games such as baseball and soccer.

Lewis Park was named after William and Margaret Lewis successful farmers in the area.

Lewis Park is a 17.39 acre municipally-owned park located immediately to the east of the Courtenay River bridge, across from Simms Millennium Park on the Old Island Highway. The park is naturally bounded by the Courtenay, Puntledge and Tsolum Rivers and features several mature trees, open play fields, trails, tennis courts, skateboard park and four notable buildings.??http://www.historicplaces.ca/en/rep-reg/place-lieu.aspx?id=14469

  • ?Totem Poles at entrance to Lewis Park -?The spiritual value of Lewis Park is exemplified in the park?s two totem poles which stand prominently at?the park entrance, serving to grant peace to those who enter. A series of three totem poles have been?erected here, the first placed in 1927, purchased from Chief Joe Wallace of the Greenpoint Rapids?reserve. These were replaced in 1957??by two new poles carved by internationally renowned aboriginal?artist Mungo Martin and raised in a traditional ceremony by K?omoks Chief Andy Frank. The third pair of?poles were placed in 2002, carved by Calvin Hunt, Mungo Martin?s step-grandson. These totems remain?an important link to the area?s First Nations people.Courtenay_heritage_register2009.pdf

Courtenay's network of parks and trails just got a little bigger. The newly opened Rotary Trail connects 5th Street and Cumberland Road, along the E & N Rail Corridor.

The City partnered with the Island Corridor Foundation and the Courtenay Rotary Club to complete the project, also known as a "rail with trail". Courtenay Rotary raised thousands of dollars?and?contributed volunteer labour to make the trail a reality.

The park equipment includes a rotating net, arch swing, wheelchair accessible merry-go-round, see-saw, diggers and spinners. Due to its location just south of the Courtenay Airpark, the Rotary Skypark has an airplane theme, with an airplane climber, and a gazebo that kids can pretend is their very own air-traffic control tower.??
